Can someone tell me if the thread of a Manfrotto 058 tripod will accept that on a Gitzo head?
I have an 058 with 029 head both of which are excellent for the weight of my Ansco Agfa 10x8, but being a heavy camera I am concerned that the QR plate of the 029 is the only contact on the base of the camera and rather small for its size. So I thought one of the large Gitzo 'table top' type heads would be better. Would it fit?
It's likely that the head mounting screw on your tripod is 3/8, at least that's what B&H shows for the Manfrotto "058B" tripod. The Gitzo heads I am familiar with also use 3/8 mounting screws. You should be good to go.
If not, as Shutterfinger notes, adapting one or the other is likely easy.
Thank you for your help but I don't think I made myself very clear. I am referring to the screw/bolt at the top of the tripod onto which the actual head itself is screwed.
thanks again for your help.

The threaded screw/bolt at the top of a tripod or monopod is called Mount Stud, the plate its in the center of is called Mount Plate, the threaded receptacle in the head is called MountSocket.
I've only been in photography since the early 1970's and never heard them called anything else.
The Mount Stud is almost universally either a 3/8" thread (or much more rarely a 1/4" thread) because there are people who mount cameras (usually large format) directly to tripod legs, without an intervening thread.

I have a Velbon tripod with a 1/4" mount stud. I mounted my Gitzo head on it using the same adapter that can be used for mounting cameras with 3/8" sockets on heads/plates with 1/4" bolts.
I have a Velbon with a 1/4-20 mount stud that I am going to replace with a 3/8-16 stud.
I don't want the hassle of one tripod with a different size mount stud. That makes switching head between tripods difficult, because the adapter is usually screwed into the socket on the head, and goes with the head, not staying on the tripod.
But then, the Velbon is a medium duty tripod, and I would not put my LF camera on it.
