Gitzo G1027 lost head and not sure what parts.

I lost the head from a G1027 tripod and I'm not sure what came off with it or if it is broken. I can unscrew what looks like a 3/8 to 1/4 adapter but it only catches with 1/3 turn so it seems insecure to me but I'm not familiar with it so maybe that's ok. Also, when it is in, there's very little thread that a 1/4" could catch on before "bumping" into the center that inside.

So my question is what do I need to buy in addition to a new ball head?

The tripod to head mount screw/stud should be a minimum of 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch long on both the tripod and head sides. This should equate to 6 to 8 complete turns each side.

I was able to back out the 3/8 threaded rod which had gotten screwed all the way into the tripod. The ball head must have come off by spinning this treaded rod into the tripod base. Is there supposed to be a lock nut or something that would prevent this? Otherwise when the ball head is spun around, what is to prevent it from loosening the connection to the tripod?

Lost on Cliff Mountain in the Adirondacks, unfortunately. The tripod was attached to my backpack but the head must have spun off.

The threaded rod part on my tripod does NOT have the nut attached to it which is shown on gitzospares.com (D01.110. Rever 1/4 3/8 Screw). I bought the tripod used so perhaps it was switched out. The one I have is just 3/8 threaded until it jumps down to 1/4 threaded. It looks the same minus the nut.

Put a drop on the threaded stud and thread into the head and snug. Allow to cure, repeat for the tripod end.
