Every now and then I'd like to use a tripod with my close focus DR Summicron for a little detail work and a little landscape. Plus I've got a project that calls for kooky angles. Looking into tripods I see an enormous amount of dizziing choices. The gitzo explorer seems like the most versatile choice for getting into bizarre spots for detail work.

The arca swiss p0 head seems like the best idea ever since it can be adjusted with one hand. Looks really well made but I've not laid my hands on one. They've got a slide fix especially to fit M bodies that doesn't look like it will dig into my side when I carry the camera under my elbow.

So has anyone tried this combo?

And the biggest question here is if you have the slidefix plate attached to your camera does it dig in your side when you have your camera slung across your body, under your elbow?

Hello. I have been using a Gitzo 1 series along with an Arca Swiss P0 for years with my Leicas. It is by far the best combo I've tried. Lightweight and sturdy, even with some wind.

Thanks for the response!

I did end up buying a gitzo explorer, latest model. I love it but my Leica did hit the ground for the first time in 20 years. It was my fault. I left it alone for a few seconds I heavy wind. I got a little patina but no internal damage.

I have yet to buy the Arca stuff but it's on the menu.

Thanks again!

Ah yes, that nasty gust of wind. Luckily it turned out ok.
You might have a little hook at the bottom of the center column. Hang your camera bag there next time: it will stabilise your tripod even more by lowering its gravity center. Moreover it will absorb some of the vibrations during windy episodes.
