South African photographer, Gideon Mendel, produces work with social commentary. I especially like his Freedom or Death series which uses improperly stored finished film that underwent damage from moisture and mold. It creates a surreal effect on the images which enhance the statement they make.

I love how he documents people's struggles but also the beauty left behind by floods/fires. Very compelling!
