I have some 'misting' on the underside surface of the glass on my Epson 1650 A4 flatbed that I was given by a now-deceased Camera Club member -- I am getting bad scan lines, especially if negs are a bit dense. I cannot see HOW to get to take off the top to get to the glass. -- any help here ?

John -- Many thanks - I had a look -- well -it seems difficult ! Also, MY one is model Perfection 1650 and that manual is for the 1670 --- probably the same to get the top cover off to clean under the glass though ! I will have a go just as far as that.

1. turn the scanner on and press the scan button. when the scanner has moved off the home position and is partway into the scan pull the power plug from the rear of the scanner, you will not hurt it.
in the home position the scan module is locked in position and it makes removing the cover very difficult.
2. unplug the transparency adapter from the rear of the scanner and lift the lid off.
3. remove the two screws that are at the bottom of the hinge pin slots in the rear of the scanner.
4. lift the base cover up from the rear then using a small flat blade screwdriver gently pry outward as needed to release the tabs that secure it at the front.
5. unplug the switch cables from the switch board and disengage the wires from the top cover.
6. remove the screws holding the cover over the lamp and mirrors.
7. clean the mirrors, lens front element (remove mirror components as needed) and bed glass.
8. Do not remove the sensor. the sensor is on the rear of the scan block/module and must be realigned if removed. Realignment requires a test target, scan it, move the sensor a tenth of a millimeter or less and scan again until the image is perfect across the bed.
Assembly is reverse of disassembly. The scan block will return to the home position on the next power up.

not sure if they are the same model .. but for the most part you just take the lid off
turn it upside down and unscrew a few screws ... the very front is a plastic cover that pops off
the switches and the rest just comes apart too ...

have fun !

sorry, no gum here but legend has it in the teens and 20s
when people were at the beach, mr wrigley used to walk around the sun bathing
ladies and hand them all stick of his gum ... before him, i think it was all "chickle"

Well -- success ! I had a go to take off top and accessed the glass and cleaned it underneath with glass cleaner and put it back again ! The only trouble is that there is a bad connection with the wire where it goes into the scanner and it may be partially broken inside the wiring so sometimes it will not scan correctly -- I get a funny noise then on Vuescan it comes up just with a load of coloured lines instead of the Thumbnail scans of strip of negs. I have to mess about switching OFF scanner and Vuescan then on again and sometimes Vuescan has not 'found' the scanner !

Clip the suspect piece off and resolder or screw on whatever that may be.

Bad chip or ribbon cable. One of the 1640su did that, careful wiggling the cable got it working for a few months but it died on the next disassembly. The replacement cost $5 off ebay.
Similar models should be cheap on ebay.

Double check all connections that were disconnected as being off one pin on the connector is easy, reseat the ribbon cable(s), you may have inadvertently pulled it part way out of the socket. (they push in with pressure, avoid bending)

The 'Bad Connection' trouble was happening before I took the lid off. The mains wire does not seem to be just 'plugged in' -- I tried to pull it out gently.
I show a photo -- the bad connection is with the Black and White lead coming out of the Voltage Regulator thing.

hi pentaxpete

i found the service manual
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/826623/Epson-Perfection-1670-Photo.html

it explains it well ...
i found a similar manual ( and tid bits online )
for my 4870 which i have taken apart a handful of times both to clean the schmutz off of the glass and to lubricate the glide track thingy
its really not hard, and takes no time at all ....

good luck !
john

Hello , I also have the 4870 with a smattering of crud under the glass .
Not so noticable with 5x4 negs but ruins 120 neg scans .
Could you share a link to where you found it's service manual , or forward me a copy on ?
Also , what did you lubricate the runners with ? I might as well do that at the same time .

Thanks in advance .

Does anyone know what causes the haze/crud under the scanner glass? I removed the top glass from my Epson 4990, cleaned it, and the haze came back shortly afterwards. I never figured out how to remove the scanner bed glass so I took it to an authorized Epson service guy and had it cleaned. On that too, the haze came back. Very frustrating.

the bad connection is with the Black and White lead coming out of the Voltage Regulator thing.
That's the AC Power Adapter. It converts the AC (household) power to a DC voltage. Putting it in a box external of the scanner reduces heat build up inside the scanner and may be more cost effective.
The wires break at the plug or the end of the strain relief (the round plastic/rubber ribs behind the plug) when bent at too sharp an angle, released, bent again repeated over time.
Replace the power adapter, make does not matter as long as the AC IN voltage and output voltage and current ratings are the same.

White lithium grease or a light weight grease with teflon such as https://www.amazon.com/Finish-Line-...keywords=teflon+grease+finish+line&th=1&psc=1
Apply a trace that is just detectable.

Its usually caused by the plastic gassing out as very little grease is used. The type of glass cleaner may attract contaminates from the atmosphere as the scanner is not air tight and glass cleaners leave a residue. I use Windex then rub down with a clean heavyweight microfiber lens cleaning cloth once the Windex residue has dried.

Thank you. I'll try that next time.
