Gelatin filters

Gutenabend Mirko and Team!

I was wondering if it is hard to coat gelatin filters in more colours than the 85B snap on you have. For example 80A

With my RB67 I got the gelatin filter holder. I read that gelatine filters degrade over time, I shot indoor with the 80A filter and liked the results, but it would be good to have new ones. Kodak is still mentioning their Wratten filters in the datasheets of their most recent film (E100) but as far as I know, they don't produce them anymore.

Since I mention the filter holder, would it also be possible to sell square filters rather than the round snap on ones?

Last time I checked, Tiffen and Kodak had a deal. Tiffen apparently offers Wratten gel filters. I used them quite a bit for making color separation negatives or whenever I required a highly unusual filter.. Very expensive to say the least.

Hi Ernst-Jan,
we have already extended our *SNAP-ON* filter line by adding a yellow and a red filter:
https://www.fotoimpex.de/shop/kameras-zubehoer/filter/adox-snap-on-gel-filter/

Another new colour filter is currently already in the works .
Concerning a further extension of the filter programme: We will think about it and continue to evaluate the market and the demand.

Good to know that you are adding more products to your spectrum

By the way, you link to the German site. Since a few months it's not possible to select shipment to a non-German speaking country when visiting fotoimpex.de
Not a big issue, but I already forgot two times after I had my shopping cart filled

Ernst,

this is because of the new VAT regulations from this year. We now have to charge a different VAT for every EU country!
A bureaucratic nightmare invention for the protection of large retailers against the idea and spirit of the common market and against small and mid sized businesses.
But in Germany we are on top obliged by law to show the prices with sales tax included only and these two things exclude each other.
Therefore we made the .com shop only international and net prices based.
So you would have to use the .com shop for the Netherlands unfortunately.

I hope this explains the situation.

Cutting a square shape is possible since we only have to change the cutting matrix but creating a new color means a full production run so the set up costs are in the range of 10.000 EUR. Thus we need a market estimation which exceeds this in order to justify this investment.

Market research in not my job, but via this thread you now know that at least one person would by them

Regarding the .de domain, I thought it was a bug, but it is designed like this. No problem, I just removed the .de domain from my history I guess it's them same legislation that gives me a receip if I buy an ice-cream

A reasonably priced (sub $50) IR gel (≈ 700 nm) would be incredibly welcome.

Have you tried our existing deep red IR 2X filter?
I have plenty of deep red filters. And gels are easy and pretty cheap to obtain in that range.
600nm just doesn’t cut it (sic).

HR-50/Scala is a wonderful film. It deserves a ≈700nm filter.
It’s plenty fast to shoot at EI 10 which makes it hand-holdable with a rangefinder in daylight.
Also I don’t want precut filters.
SLR people have plenty of options with various gel holders.

Please give me a reasonably sized square.
I might buy more than one, when I find I cut it too small or scratch it to smithereens.

So this means you have not tried it?
This filter is the best we can do based on Cibachrome dyes.
Finding a deeper red dye which is long term light stable dispersed in gelatin is difficult.
For now we gave up on this.
But our current product gives a nice pseudo IR effect. We have the transmission curves somewhere and its is >600nm.
As far as "cutting down" filters we can offer this, but our filters are of a different quality than other gel filters and therefore also of a different price.
"cutting down" and throwing away precious cibachrome dyed matrial is just a stretch for me ;-)
Which sizes are you thinking of?
9x9 cm?

I had a feeling that was the answer.
Look, I know you are doing the best you can and the filter is probably very good. It's just not a real IR filter.
And yeah, I was thinking of standard Wratten size.

Deep red are good if you "only" want hints of the IR effect and not the whole drastic thing. And they let you see through the filter when using an SLR.
I've got nothing against deep red. I use it sometimes with NIR film. Nice for the extra speed, and seeing through the lens. Perfect for for example tele lenses where you want to cut through aerial perspective, and compose the shot tightly.
It's just not pushing HR-50 as far as it will go, into IR only territory.
