Garmin Nuvi 200

Nope, it's not an affliction. It's an automotive GPS. I just returned from a road trip (10,000 km) to the maritimes. I thought automotive GPS's were a gimmick used by techno nerds and chipheads. We got a little turned around (lost as hell) in St. John New Brunswick trying to find a friend. I decided then and there to try a GPS. I bought the little critter for $169 from Canadian Tire. I thought automotive GPS's were a gimmick used by techno nerds and chipheads until I tried one. Absolutely a must have for a road trip. Punch in the address and the little bugger directs you (by voice) turn by turn. "In 500 meters turn left." The more expensive models call out the street names for you, but the base model nuvi displays them on the screen. The unit uses a touch screen. It has a very short learning curve and is very intuitive. (The manual is a whopping 5 pages)
I won't leave town without it.

BTW -the maritimes are a photographer's paradise. Not only was the scenery and architecture stunning, we met the nicest people! I ate seafood until my arms were tired. In Lunenburg (Yes, the bluenose was there) we had a pound of mussels cooked any way you like and a pint of Propeller Beer for $10. I'm in heaven...

I got my proofs back from the lab and they look good. I'll post some pics.

I had a similar skepticism about the things. Having had a hiking GPS for years, I did not expect the automotive version to be a big boon. Boy was I wrong.

While driving around, I have looked for nearby attractions (parks, museums, etc.) and have found lots of interesting stuff. Of course, I don't fiddle with it while actually driving ......

My Garmin has led me astray a few times though - it picks routes, on occasion, that seem the "scenic" way, whether set for faster route or shorter distance. It has once gone haywire and directed me in the completely wrong direction. I think you have to broadly know where you're going to be absolutely sure.

I will be off to Superior (Provincial Park to Marathon, maybe beyond, very soon. You are lucky to live in an incredibly scenic area - best part of Ontario for sure!
