Hello all, here is my 2cents worth. I am a 43 year old subscriber here on APUG who takes photographs to get new material to work with in the darkroom. This is a hobby and not a source of income.

When I first joined in 2007, I think I was searching for info on whatever, when I stumbled across this site. From memory I did not subscribe initially as I like to try/sample before I buy. At some point in time I did subscribe because I felt this was a resource that should be supported. APUG is not expensive for me, though in these times other sites I once subscribed to have fallen by the wayside as I am not drawn into them almost daily like here.

I have posted images. Albeit only 2. Why? In my case I just can't be bothered sitting in front of the computer to scan and then try to get the image on the screen to match the original and then resize before posting. I use a computer for 6-8 hours a day at work, and the last place I want to be is in front of one at home. The small tablet devices out there on the other hand let me pick up and read and write anywhere.

These are my circumstances if they are of any use.

Lastly. My hat goes off to all the moderators and Sean in particular for everything they work on in the background. If it was not for all of you APUG would not exist.

The rules here are you can't scan a negative and post your image that way. That's the ONLY way I can share my images. SO, I only post them to LargeFormat website, or Photo.Net etc. I've never posted an image here, and I shoot film almost daily with a nice collection of historic cameras & lenses.

Yes, you can, Kent...

You can scan your neg and make minimal edit and post it. We just aren't allowed to make extensive edit - a kind that will be next to impossible in darkroom, well beyond your ability in darkroom, or the kind that will change nature of your image. Taken in sprit of the site, the rule allows you to do kind of things you would do anyway in darkroom and make a comparable image for upload purpose.

I would really love to see your images.

I'm not sure why I never upload my photos. This thread has me thinking about it though. I think I just assumed that those interested would visit my website. I may be wrong....

Not true:

Please refrain from posting any images that have been manipulated digitally such as converting color images to black and white, photoshop filtering tricks, etc. Also no multi-media/mixed media hybrid images or hybrid images in general, this includes digitally enlarged negatives which are then contact printed (see our sister site hybridphoto.com if you are interested in sharing such work). All images posted should be a representation of 100% traditional work, typically negative scans or print scans produced from a 100% traditional workflow.

The uploaded image should be the best representation of the actual final print and nothing more. We still accept neg scans in the galleries. We accept that some adjustment of contrast, brightness and sharpness may be needed to match the physical print and, for negative scans, to approximate a straight print.

i am not sure where you heard that negative scans are not allowed ..
i am sure there are people here who wish that was true, as much as some people believe
b/w photographs or color nudes at slot canyon be the only real photographic images allowed
and be considered the only true photography ... but much to their disappointment,
negative scans, slide scans, colorphotographs of crying clowns, and puppies and cats
playing with geess, nearly everything else you can thing of are allowed in the gallery.
as long as huge ps gymnastics are not done ...

The Gallery can be a very intimidating place - for me anyway. :confused:The quality of the work is far beyond most of my efforts and so I've been reluctant but I'm game so I've uploaded my first image today. Hope you enjoy it.

I first joined as a member in about 2004ish (I'll be able to tell when I see the date below my name when I post). I became a subscriber after seeing the thumbnails of gallery images on the side and wanted badly to see them bigger. I've learned so much in the last few years just by being able to view the other images. I believe way more people should subscribe, but I do know how fickle people can be on the web.
I sorta like the open gallery weeks idea. If members can see the fantastic work in the gallery, they could realize the value in subscribing.
Also, I think many look without posting on images because others already have and they don't have anything to add or because they don't think they can really make a quotable comment.

I rarely post in the gallery because I edit my work pretty ruthlessly and I show very few images to others. Not that I'm saying what I have posted is exceptional... Anyway, I'm trying to break out of this and put some work out there. Even the images I have posted are usually more in the vein of "Hey, look what I did!" then actually trying to publish art for people to see... I have not had a real gallery show in over ten years for this exact reason, I can't decide what to show, or I'm afraid that it doesn't have anything to say.

I tend to be pretty conservative with my CS5 work. As for b&w conversion, mine is done by Ilford. I'm a pretty eclectic outdoor photographer, but my specialty is shooting freight trains. I do it at night, using flash. I've been using my 1951 Rolleiflex with either Portra 400 or HP5 for that. I've been shooting trains at night for about six years now. This winter I'm breaking out the 4x5 to do it.

I alter images to match the prints or slides. Nothing more that I can do on-easel.

I looked Art, and I like it.

You should consider adding it to the submissions in the current Monthly Shooting Assignment ("MSA"): "Between Sharp and Unsharp"

Here is the current thread: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

You can accomplish the submission by just moving the shot to the appropriate MSA Gallery - the edit function allows for that.

You ain't the only one. I've uploaded my share, but each time I submit I have to remind myself that everyone starts somewhere!

I'm typically not intimidated on other forums, but this one is terribly intimidating.

I don't have a scanner. And I'm not a subscriber--I honestly can't afford it at this time.

Plus I have an anxiety disorder, I don't show my work to anyone. I most likely will burn all of my photos eventually.

I let me subscription lapse some time ago: fading interest and lack of time for photography, compounded by a house move and no darkroom meant I wasn't spending much time here or contributing to the forum.

By coincidence, I subscribed again a few days ago. Feeling inspired a lot more this year, getting comfortable in a new (well 9 months old now) darkroom, and thanks to a generous donation of paper spending a lot of time refining technique and experimenting without financial constraints.

I've just uploaded my first gallery contribution since Nov 2009. The only one of my prints that's ever been on display in a gallery!

Glad to have gallery access again, for inspiration and pure browsing enjoyment of others work.

I joined in 2009 almost directly with a subscription, and by posting photos in the gallery. For quite a while I used the gallery much more than the forum, and still it is almost more important for me than the forum.

Not only the images are of high quality (which makes me think always twice until I decide to load up my own images, if they can keep up at least to some extent with this quality) but also the comments are in my opinion generally much more serious and useful for improving oneself than in other internet photo galleries - and critique is always formulated carefully and constructive.

It may be that this high comment quality in the gallery is also due to the required subscription. So it might useful if a "free trial gallery access" would be limited to viewing images and comments - but writing comments still require a subscription.

I probably post too many images, but sometimes I get comments about aspects of the image that I had never noticed and find this interesting.

Which can be a tough job, when some folks just want to hear a certain answer, or aren't prepared for something that will be difficult to do. But I think you're one of the most level headed and diplomatic ones on here, Matt. Always a pleasure to read your posts.
