They also have a kickstarter for dry plate holders....

I was just reading about Samuel Bourne photographing in India in the 1860's... he had as many as 30 porters to carry his glass plates and equipment!
( I've always liked this one of his )

If only they were doing some actual plate sizes. Trimming a plate would be such a shame, and cutting film already makes me bad enough. I have seen some recent plates made in China as well elsewhere.

they are doing actual plate sizes
4x5, 5x7, 8x10, ( 11x14 and 16x20 special pledge )

you are right there are some plates
that seem to be coming out of china
it is xray emulsion so it is slow ... the galaxy ones
seem to be english / conventional sizes and faster than xray emulsion.

Film is slightly less than plate dimensions so that it can fit in an adapter sleeve in a plate holder.

Ilford still make plates, those of us who have been on factory tours have seen demonstrations of the plate coating line. At the moment they only supply plates to one customer and the cost is high, but if demand was there maybe they'd be approachable.

Sorry, I meant the whole, half, and quarter plate size series. They are the reason I am working up the courage to coat plates.

hi robin

i haven't been in touch with them in a long while
their website ( http://galaxy-paper.com ) seems to be up and running
and the kickstarter page suggests that in february 2017 they will be shipping plates..
have you tried to reach them through their website ?

while i can't afford anything they are selling at the moment, i think what they are doing
is a lot of fun, and as a group analog people are pretty lucky to have companies
coating plates, making record books for exposures, making pre rolled paper negative ( i think that was them )
and reintroducing a simple reversal kit. after kodak pulled their tmax100 reversal kits from the market
there wasn't much left ...

I missed the KS funding for the plates but with neither the plates or the holders getting anywhere near the $300,000 that they needed, I can only presume that the plates will not be made.

They have brought out a reversal paper though, available in the US and the UK. Unlike Harman's positive paper, which is developed in ordinary print developer, for the Galaxy paper you have to buy a reversal kit of chemicals and expose the paper to light etc. So for me I think I will stick with the Harman product as it's much easier to use. One main difference though is the speeds of both. Galaxy is about ISO 120 and Harman about ISO 3, so that might sway some people.

I participated in the Kickstarter campaign for the GALAXY PHOTOGRAPHER'S PLANNER AND HANDBOOK project. After a year's delay myself and many many others never got the promised note books. To add insult to injury they did make the note books available for purchase at B and H as well as other on line spots. Not to be dramatic, but myself and many others were shafted by Galaxy.

Their Facebook pages have not been active for months. I tracked down the personal profile of one of the members of 'team galaxy' and she also has not posted anything for months. It seems they are in hiding.

People, put messages on their facebook page, every where you can. They are scammers and others people must know the truth.

Is there anyway of finding out how many people didn't receive this? It looks like they had another Kickstarter in July that they might not have delivered on, judging by the comments.

Still no book. Still no reply from Galaxy. Looks like they pocketed our money and did a runner. Shameful.

Still no book - Think I've been robbed like so many others who backed this - they are unresponsive and it reeks of something dodgy

Bit of confusion as various figures are mentioned. Yes, you are correct about the $10,000 goal for the plates. Interesting to see if anyone who backed them got any.

I quoted from further down the page:

'To bring the costs down at least by 30%

WE NEED TO BUILD OUR OWN GLASS-COATING FACILITY!

To make it possible, we need to raise at least $300,000 in this campaign. From different previous photographic campaigns, we know that it’s a realistic figure, and we just need your help to achieve it'

Recently I thought that I was taken for a ride on KS with the 'Digital Holga camera' campaign as well. After waiting for months after the final delivery date, I and others heard nothing and comments started to be posted on their page. I finally got two emails. One saying that they had not received any money from KS yet and the second, asked me to confirm my address etc. As it turns out I got the camera in the post about 3 weeks later. Not sure what's going on with the paperwork dealing side. I just hope everyone else got their cameras as well. Whilst all this was all happening I checked the small print and surprise, surprise, KS will NOT take any liability of any kind once they have passed the money over. Totally up to the punters to chase them for either the goods or a refund.

Searching around after posting about offering dry plates for sale, I found this thread. It doesn't seem like Galaxy ever delivered?

Yeah, I think they went bust. I’d been following them for a while, but then all news dried up. Don’t think they ever delivered on the Galaxy paper, either. It’s a shame, because the new glass plate holders they promised would have been a real boon.

That's too bad, although I suppose it leaves room for me to fill the demand for plates. I could consider doing a Kickstarter and pull in the folks who wanted them. I'd just need to find someone to help me make a video. And navigate the inevitable comparisons.

Of course I've thought about the possibility of making new plate holders too ... but I don't know if the demand warrants it. Their plate holder Kickstarter campaign didn't reach the funding threshold. I know plenty of mechanical engineers who could design it if there was.

Anyways, fun to dream.
