I haven't gone through the whole website, but spent a good half hour going through his Annual Favorites: https://gdanmitchell.com/equipment-reports-tests-and-commentary

A lot of colour photography smacks of corporate annual report photos or run & Gatling gun stock photographer "Oh, look at the stunning colours" eye candy photos.

His images are much deeper than that with obvious intent and care given to all aspects of his images, and reminded me at times of Eliot Porter and Christopher Burkett.

Thanks for posting the link. Very nice work 👍👍

He has a formidable talent for balancing the tones in a photograph and emphasizing what he wants without his handiwork being garish or unnatural. Scroll down through these 13 fall colour photographs to see what I mean:

Dan is a great and committed photographer. He makes it a point to do photography practically every day. I first met Dan around 15 years ago when I ran a photography meetup group. At the time he was a music instructor at DeAnza College. Since then, we crossed paths on several occasions while out photographing. On one occasion I had spotted a band of fog laying over Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo County. I thought it would make a good “fog photo” and pulled the car over and got the big Pentax and tripod out of the trunk. But upon walking to the location, I ran into Dan coming back saying “It's too late - the fog has lifted.” Another time I was thru hiking on the John Muir Trail and ran into Dan and his group at a common campsite. They had just completed the High Sierra Route and were proceeding to Mount Whitney and exiting at the Portal – the same route that I was taking. We both summited Mt Whitney on the same day and sat and listened to the Green Turtle, an elderly gentleman I his late 70's or 80's, reminisce about outdoors. “Green Turtle” was his trail name because, he said, that was the only thing that he could keep up with.

If you're into wildflower photography, this is going to be a banner year in California - the best in decades.
