I just bought a Schneider G-Claron 240mm F9 ... the lens is in very nice shape but... it doesn't seem to cover 8x10. I have fall off in all four corners in a photo with no shifts, or rise/drop. Any ideas. The photo was a test shot of a large building.

The first question (sorry if this seems stupid): Are you using any sort of hood, filter or adapter ring?

Dear Rob,

According to this, the 240mm G-Claron does not cover 8x10.

Yes, but Schneider's published coverage numbers are notoriously pessimistic.

I have a 240 G-Claron and at infinity, stopped down (f32 and smaller apertures), mine covers 8x10.

At what aperture(s) did you check your lens?

Also, lens hoods (previously mentioned) and screw-in filters can cause vignetting.

What F stop are you using, it makes a difference.

Good question... yes I had a orange 52mm filter on and a small rubber hood.
However on my test I also tried some front rise that had a huge amount of drop off on the resulting pics.

Shot on a piece of 7X17 film a Schneider 240 G-Claron has a useable circle of about 405 to 410 mm. You're doing something wrong. Try again.

It sounds like you'e getting some vignetting with the filter. If you stop down to f32 and beyond, you should have quite a bit of room for movements.

Did you know that if you put a regular rubber hood on a 240mm lens it doesn't cover 8x10.... yet without the hood it does. Strange lens.
I just wish I'd asked this question before I bought the 240.... since I was having similar problems with my former 210 lens and it's rubber hood. Oh well the 240 is lighter and should give me some room to move around.
Thanks for all your help..... I guess that question about the hood wasn't so silly afterwards.

Compendium lens shade is the way to go. Better flexibility and more movements are available. tim

I use a 240 on my dorff and also a Standard Lee hood, works good unless I try to use front movements. I use mostly back movements with this lens anyway.

You could also just not use the hood on your lens. I have a Lee hood that I bought used at a local store for those times where I thought I would need it. More often than not, I don't use it though. This is usually because I'm using my 4mm thick IR filter or the lens I am using doesn't have filter threads or is way too small for trying to put a filter holder on.
