Hi All,
The forum templating system is quite complex and trying to find the best spots for ads can span 100's of templates and intricate areas within the template codes. Google adsense offers an 'auto ad' solution where their system 'sees' the page itself, and determines where to inject the ads in the page. I enabled this yesterday, and instructed it to be 'less aggressive' in the serving. I did some testing on this and from what I can tell it only added an extra ad or two on some longer pages (maybe 1 more in the sidebar or footer), it may also find a few other spots as the system learns the pages.
So far, it seems to equate to nearly a 40% increase in ad revenue from the extra ad serves. This is good news as long as it doesn't disturb the community. If you come across anything too invasive, please let me know (doubled up ads blowing out the top of the site or such). There should not be any pop ups, full page, large header ads, text ads or ads inside text posts. Ads should mainly be in the outer borders of the site (header, sidebar, footer).
Again, thanks to all those who have disabled their adblockers and sport the "ads enabled" badge under their avatar
Sean
