Hi All,

APUG is now running Elastisearch. This is a 3rd party search tool that has many benefits over the built in forum search (especially for large databases like on APUG). Before this new search we had issues with search words such as "D76" and complaints of searches taking a long time. This should be a nice improvement. Also, you will notice the Google search is still an option on your search results page:

Forum Search tab on the results page:

And for those who want google results, click on the Google Results tab:

Any problems let me know.

Thanks,
Sean

With the old system the internal search system turned out useless (for me). I then used the Google search only.

Am curious about that new system in practice.

You don't have to do anything. All searches use the new system now by default.

Yes, I meanwhile realized that. Reading a post completely helps a lot...

I also just changed the results from relevance to most recent. That seems to make more sense to me as relevance is usually close anyway, but am open to changing it back if others find that an issue. So for example if someone searches "Ilford" it will show most recent posts with that word, instead of posts possibly from 2003, etc. I just tried it and it worked great, showed posts with "Ilford" from 4 minutes ago, 20 minutes ago, etc.

We use Elastic (ElasticSearch) at work for searches of a rather large database. It's fast! You chose wisely, Sean.

Not only is it super fast but I was able to reduce our database size by 1.6gig. Our database dumps used to take 6 minutes on the old server and old search index in the db, now on the new server with search index out of the db the dump took under 2mins
