fyi- New APUG Server Hardware Ordered

Hi All,

We've been on this current server for a few years and I've decided to get us onto some new hardware. We'll be going from single cpu to a dual cpu running 12 cores @ 2.4ghz. Also, double the memory, faster disks, much newer OS and core server software versions, gigabit connection and other misc huge jumps in performance.

The host will take around 3-4 days to build and stress test the new server. Then we'll plan migrating our current data to the new server. The outage shouldn't be too bad, hopefully less than 30 minutes.

Provided the new OS runs the APUG system software with no mods, and there is no problem with the 12 core dual cpu, and the faster disks don't cause any problems, and etc... Best wishes Sean, but I'm not going to count on less than an hour. Muahahahaha. BTDT

The new server is built, tested and ready. I'll now plan the migration of our current data to the new server.

I assume you upgraded the punch card reader at the same time. (From one who remembers a Univac 1108 with a remarkable 3 CPUs and drum storage).

Long before the Univac 1108, I used an IBM 7094.

If it's within your budget then you might consider going with SS HDs.

If it's what I'm thinking off, the 7094 could be "programmed" with boards. There was one - still in use for some ancillary purpose I can't remember - in the computer science center at U of Md circa 1970.

You're too right. Although the core migration went ok I have definitely run into many many config issues and errors, plus many tweaks required. I've been at it for a while, last night resolved email issues and today there is a glitch with new user registrations and 'mark all read'. Once that is sorted out things will be in good shape. Then we are testing a 1.5.5a to 1.5.6 forum software patch update, plus an update to our style framework. The style framework patch should resolve a few glitches such as the menubar reloading every time a tab is selected, etc. Never ends!

You might want to consider Docker-izing (or any similar technique, jails for FreeBSD etc) the entire site for the next migration. It takes some time and requires some new thinking, but it's easy once you have an image on a private repository and a proper backup of databases, static files etc. If the new server does down, you simply download the exact same environment to a new computer and you'll be up and running faster.

Anyways, I hope the migration goes well!
