Hi All,

I have been working on our APUG dedicated language forums. This is a work in progress but still functional enough that it may be useful for some. I now have language packs and dedicated language forums installed for:

English
French
Dutch
German
Italian (new)

The logo in the site header now controls what system language your APUG viewing will be set in. For example click the Italian tag and you will be taken to the Italian forums + the forum system texts will be in Italian.

I am now working on our registration form so that the languages can also be chosen there.

Any problems just let me know. I will notify our foreign language moderators so they can relay this information to their members.

Thanks!
Sean

P.S. special thanks to APUG member Roberto for taking on the Italian forum translations and moderation. I look forward to seeing how it develops.

Not sure that I like that hybrid UK/US flag! Didn't you know that Real English and US 'English' are now two totally separate languages?!!

Sorry, it´s not my language, but I don´t like the "mixed" US-UK flag either for the reasons Steve mentioned!

How about the English flag?

http://www.flags.net/images/largeflags/UNKG0100.GIF

The hybrid flag you already have is in reality, probably the best option despite our objections to it. You could have a full Union flag and a full US flag with the same link on each of them.

Why not stars and stripes and the union jack each? Make a block of six flags above complete... And both flags with the same link as Steve suggested. Will work best and everybody will be happy IMHO ;-)

Ok, have taken a different approach in the main site logo with just text instead. Seems a bit cleaner too...

Just to be pedantic (and of no value to the purpose of this thread) it's a union flag, not a jack. It is only a jack if flown from the jackstay of a ship.

That's o.k. 90% of British people call it a jack too.

Sean, a very diplomatic solution to a "flag dispute" ;-)

I am set-up in French.

Sean,

There is an issue with the second menu bar in the Dutch language. Apart from the fact that not all items have been translated, the menu's get scrambled due to to long description. Unfortunately, the Dutch language just isn't as compact as English. Often, a translation to Dutch results in a 30% increase / inflation in the number of characters.

My suggestion:

New Posts - Nieuwe post (replaces "Nieuwe berichten")
Today's Posts - Post vandaag (replaces "Welke berichten zijn er vandaag?")
Subscribed Threads - Abonnementen (replaces "Geabonneerde Onderwerpen")
My Threads - Mijn discussies (replaces "My Threads")
My Post - Mijn post
Calendar - Kalender
Member List - Leden (replaces "Leden lijst")
Spy - Spion
Mark Forum Read - Zet discussies gelezen (replaces "Markeer Forums als Gelezen")
General Settings - Instellingen (replaces "Algemene Instellingen")
My APUG - Mijn APUG
Private Messages - Persoonlijke post
Advanced Search - Zoeken

Some Dutch members may not agree with replacing the word "Berichten" (post in english), as it is used now in the Dutch forum, by also using post. Actually, post is a good Dutch word as well, but solely confined to the real postal services delivering letters and packages on your door step, and not entirely suitable for computer language. Still, it is clear and much shorter than "bericht/post - berichten/posts), so I would recommend its usage.

If people complain, you may consider the following setup, but it may still not display entirely right, however, it is shorter than current menu names used for the Dutch language.

New Posts - Nieuwe berichten
Today's Posts - Berichten vandaag
Subscribed Threads - Abonnementen
My Threads - Mijn discussies
My Post - Mijn berichten
Calendar - Kalender
Member List - Leden
Spy - Spion
Mark Forum Read - Zet discussies gelezen
General Settings - Instellingen
My APUG - Mijn APUG
Private Messages - Persoonlijke berichten
Advanced Search - Zoeken

I don't know if it's just me but when I put my cursor over the flags, it only shows as a link on the left and right edges. the middle are of the flag image does not work as a link.

In addition, you may wish to translate APUG's main menu bar as well. Here is a suggestion for the Dutch version.

Home - Home

Portfolios - Portfolios

Some words do not have a Dutch translation, like Chat, it is used like that in Dutch as well. "Classifieds" is difficult to translate in Dutch. "Aanbiedingen" comes close, but some people may prefer "Markt" (market in English), or something like that...

Actually, its worse than I posted earlier. The active area for the cursor is offset to the left by about two thirds of a flag's width. I had a play around and thought I had clicked back on English by clicking the right side of the US/English flag but got French instead!

Steve.

I think you may need to refresh after some earlier changes. Try holding down your CTRL key and the hitting F5

Thanks

The main problem I'll run into is a fair bit of hard coded english text. This will have to be updated to variables which can then be translated. That will take some time.
