A good Sign;

Of the 15 originally ordered books @ DENVER PRO PHOTO, they are all sold out, and they are having trouble getting more copies in the store, they are on back-order.

OK, I admit when I am ignorant. What is the Darkroom Cookbook?

I just got mine on Saturday and already started reading it. Looking forward to more of what it has to offer!

To all,

If you plan on ordering film, paper, and supplies from Freestyle, they also have copies of both books.

A resource which will embark you upon an endless search for hard to find, hazardous to ship and use, expensive and sometimes frustratingly difficult to succeed with, chemicals.

When everything works, you will be over the moon.

A recommended companion volume:

"Overexposure, Health Hazards in Photography" - Susan D. Shaw iSBN

I shuddered at the likely freight cost, I didn't even look it up, instinct was enough. It also seems a likely way to end up on a Federal Police database, via Fedex. Not much use to shout "I'm printing" from the darkroom when that mob arrives to check your shelves. Add that to the ASIO file from youthful politically active days and who knows what they'd come up with.

Ross, I got 5 lbs of sodium metaborate without any issue. Freight was not an issue. (cost wise)

Ross, you can get thiourea from vanbar in melbourne of all things..

Any case, I live in Oz, and I got 200g of CD-2 powder from Art Craft on the way from the U.S. for $12 shipping.

I can get chems from Silverprint.co.uk, I get bromide from there, if you know someone in the U.K postage becomes cheap, chemicals will come through even if customs opens them.

You can buy, own, and use pretty much any chemical you want here in Australia without much legal trouble, the only real problem is finding a way to get your hands on said chemical.

As for:

Diethyl Ether - should be able to get it orded in at a chemist.
Collodion, USP
Glacial Acetic Acid - vanbar has it, but i dont think they'll post it.
Ethanol 95% (190 Proof Alcohol) - why not just use metho? cheap denatured alcohol.
Formaldehyde 37% - on ebay.
Copper Chloride - you could make this.
Lavender Oil - seen this somewhere here.
Silver Nitrate - seen it on ebay, along with nitric acid, sulphuric acid, sulphur, and potassium nitrate, and concentrated hydrogen peroxide.
Ammonium Dichromate
Potassium Dichromate - vanbar has it, as they do permanganate
Ferric Chloride Crystals - -think- vanbar has it
Potassium Hydroxide - Vanbar has it, cheap/
Sodium Hydroxide - Supermarket has it 99.9% as does Vanbar

Certain chemicals are much cheaper to pay for extra shipping from the U.S. or have someone send it from Silverprint to you than getting them from vanbar, such as metol and phenidone. Works out a lot cheaper and you get a lot more.
