Fuse for Hasselblad ELM / ELX / ELD system

Dear All,

This is my 1st post in this forum. Nice to meet you all.

I am a Hasselblad 501CM user. I've been using it for a while now - mainly for street photography and portraiture. I love it this camera to bits.

Since i've been using for a while now, I started noticing the advantage of having a motor winder - especially when shooting portraiture. Recently, I've been thinking to purchase a Hassy EL system as my 2nd. I would possibly going for either 553 ELX or 555 ELD because they take AA batteries. I've done some research and I know all these EL system require a fuse (1.6amp) to run the camera. Since these EL system has been discontinued for a while now therfore the fuse made by Hasselblad should be no longer available. I wondered would it be easy to find brand new replacements?

These fuses do show up from time to time on Ebay. Usually the camera comes with two fuses: one installed and a spare one in the battery chamber. I would not worry too much about this and it should not keep you from buying one of these great cameras ;-)

By the way I would go with the 555ELD. Have it myself and it´s great. Anyway, the 553ELX is almost the same. You may want to look for the 2nd version of this camera, since it has the acute matte d. You can recognise this version by its long rubber feet, same as the 501CM has. The 1st version has 4 small feet at each corner and only features the old acute matte or maybe even some older screen. The revision was made around 1996. However, condition is more important than age with these cameras as some may have seen abundant use by professionals.

Go for the 553 elx. The 555 eld is supposed to be using some latest light absorbing flocking material back in late 90s. The problem is that they do deteriorate and causing cracks on the material and dust in the chamber. For the fuse, I think you can replace it and not necessary from Hasselblad.

A motorized Hasselblad would only weight an additional 2lbs. Is nothing. They are generally overbuilt. They aren't that loud anyway. No louder than the mirror flap.

Slixtiesix - I agree. I would probably go with 555ELD. Simply because it's newer version and more refined

The 501CM that I own came with the Acute Matte D screen (split image w/micro-prism). I find it really helpful for focusing! I hope my next purchase would come with this focusing screen.

That´s true for all the palpas coatings and even more so the earlier ones, so a 553ELX would indeed be more prone to it. I have seen no cracks yet in my 555ELD, but I have seen them in older Hasselblads from the early 90s. Even then, they are mostly a cosmetic problem.

Welcome, just to add: don't over think the focussing screen whatever the camera came with may well have been changed, you need to check what is installed. I have seen Acutte Mattes fitted from new removed and old screens substituted as the Acutte Matte will sell for a tidy price on its own, Caveat Emptor.

I blew the fuse on a 501 winder. A generic fuse replacement will be fine.
