I just went on a vest pocket folder buying binge.... yeesh. Left to right: Contessa Nettel Piccolette, Vest Pocket Kodak Autographic model B, Vest Pocket Kodak Autographic. I've got another one in the mail on its way now, and now that I've ebayed myself to the point of satisfaction with these little guys I don't mind drumming up interest in them and driving up the prices :D

The middle one is non-functional. Someone oiled the shutter a long time ago, so it was hopelessly gummed up. Given the bad condition and low price I just yanked out the lens for other uses and glued the shutter plate and levers back for cosmetic purposes.

I paid a little too much for the Piccolette ($42 incl. shipping) but they're not as common on ebay as the VPKs.

The other two will work just fine! These take 127 roll film, which you can buy from freestyle. They give a 4x4cm negative; midway between 35mm and medium format. They're tiny cameras; vest pocket is a very suitable name for them. They're approximately the size of a slim man's wallet (that is, a wallet devoid of cash, not a wallet belonging to a slim man).

Excuse the bad high angle. I had meant to reshoot with my white background but my flash batteries died after firing off this test shot.

Walker Evans did a lot of his early work with a VPK. They can be had with a rather sharp Kodak Anastigmat lens. Rumor has it there is a version with a Zeiss Tessar lens, among others.

The Evans photos shows that if you got the eye, you can do great stuff with any sort of camera.
