The Fuller Building is an excellent destination for those interested in photo and art galleries in Manhattan. I usually don't have time to hit the art galleries in the building, but I try to get all the photo galleries in when I'm in the area.
Just in the Fuller Building you have...
Howard Greenberg
Keith De Lellis
Nailya Alexander
Gitterman
And down the block is...Throckmorton.
Down on W.26th and 27th you have another 5 photo galleries within a block or so.
Today I photographed the shows in 4 of the 5 galleries. (One show didn't appeal to me, so I skipped the photos.) The staff were all very helpful and pleasant. I asked if photos were allowed. They said yes, so I blasted away. I spent about 10 to 15 minutes per show photographing it. I can't spend long as my time is mainly spent on street work, but I like to stay in touch with the galleries and museums. Mr. Throckmorton gave me a couple of old gallery catalogs. One was on a show on Manuel Alvarez Bravo. It was very nice of him as the catalogs sell for $20 to $25 each.
I'm not much of a fan of Vivian Maier, but Howard Greenberg put on a beautiful show.
(I think the prints were in the $2,000 to $6,000 each area.) To me Maier was a snapshot shooter. Someone with nostalgia value and an interesting backstory. And her photos don't offend anyone and she is a woman...so that is what makers her. I guess the only better thing for her is if she was a black, gay, transsexual. Then she may have been eve more popular?
I've got about a dozen gallery and museums shows I've shot. Eugene Richards, Irving Penn Retrospective, Araki, Andy Warhol and many others. Who knows when I will get time for PP. Maybe I will make a blog just on museum and gallery shows. My other blogs all run out of room quick.
Over the last 3 days I've shot +/- 500 photos in the galleries and museums...all candid. No one said a thing. Although one guy sitting next to me in an audio visual show on Eugene Richards at the ICP kept inching away from me as I shot a few samples from the film. I guess he didn't like the camera sounds. He finally found his sweet spot after 4 or 5 tries.
