I am currently looking for a wide field 360mm lens, and have noted that some of the 300mm and 360mm Fujinon-W series are rated to 80 degrees, while others are only rated to 68 degrees. I had previously assumed that the single-coated W versions were 6/4 construction, rated to 80 degrees, while the NW series was 6/6 construction, EBC coated, and rated at 68 degrees. However, this does not seem to be the case.

Note for instance, this page, which lists the 360/6.3 as having both single and EBC coating. And Kerry Thalmann's scans, which seems to indicate the same thing, or at least that some of the 360mm f/6.3 lenses are both EBC coated and 80 degrees.

Any ideas how to identify an 80 version?

To further complicate the issue, I note that in the brochures the 80 degree 360mm lens has an image circle of 485mm. However, it seems to me that a 360mm lens @ 80 degrees should have an ic of 604mm.

(604= 2[tan(80/2)]360)

Any explainations?

Thanks Nick somehow I missed that in my search.

So, any Fujinon-W lens with inner lettering should be 80 degrees. Did you find this to be true with the lens you bought?

Also to reiterate my point about the inconsistencies between coverage degrees and image circles, I found a brochure from DO Industries (attached, source unknown) which states that the 250 f/6.7 Fujinon-W has 80 degree coverage, but an image circle of 398mm. However a 250mm lens with 80 coverage should have an IC of 420mm...

My lens is still in the hands of the shippers. The last update of the tracking page shows it leaving O'Hare St. Patty's day. So if I'm lucky I'll have it early this coming week. Jim said it was an 80degree lens so I'm hopefull.

With the various importers I always get confused. You never know how they are figuring things. Or if they just made a mistake. 398mm would be right for the 240mm lens. Maybe they copied from the wrong column?

608mm would seem to be the right number if you do the math. My first thought was the 485mm was wide open but the webpage lists it at F/22. Only thing that makes sense is that the 485mm is the number for the newer NWS? It matches the number for the CM-W.

They show two different 360mm W lenses. Both at 485mm but one is 80 degrees the other is 68 degrees. Obviously something is wrong with that.

My guess it the older lens would be 608mm and the newer ones 485mm.

In this thread, I attached a thumbnail of a scan of a Fuji spec sheet on the Fujinon-W in FL's of 150mm-360mm. The 360mm is 80 deg and an IC of 485mm.

Mike,

It was actually your post that got me thinking about the 80 degree Fujinons. However, as I pointed out above, a 360mm lens @ 80 degrees produces an ic of 604mm, not 485mm.

Hi there Jason

just for reference I have a 210 W, the multicoated version which Fuji specs at 71 degrees, IC of 300mm. The lens cuts off at about 310mm but good image finishes at 300 just like they say it should and the math is right too.
