Fujinon 300mm F5.6 Lens and Mounted Board

I just received this lens off a Japanese seller on Ebay. I didn't notice it in the pictures, but this lens is mounted to the Toyo lens board via 4 screws instead of 1 retainer ring. Is this common practice? Getting those nuts off will be difficult to start. My concern is this will be mounted to a wood 6x6 board and the thickness of the wood may cause issues with the studs. I dont think the studs look that long, as the Toyo board is quite thin. Would a retaining ring even work mounted to an Ansco 6x6 lens board? Im concerned I may not be able to remount this on my needed board. What does anyone suggest? Also if it was necessary, could the studs even be removed? I wonder if my wood lensboard would need the thickness around the hole reduced to get this to work?

The Ansco lensboard is extremely thick. I dont know if mounting would be possible with my combo?

Those screws should be holding a threaded flange to the lens board which the shutter threads into. You should be able to unscrew the shutter and then remove the flange from the board. You will probably need longer screws for the wood board.

That is a flange, and it can be used like a retaining ring. Mount it on the front of the lens board with longer screws.

I would use a #3 or #4 flat head wood screw 1/4 to 3/8 inch long. Brass is the most commonly used screw type for flange mounting.

Use a 1/16 or 5/64 drill bit and make a pilot hole for the screw.

I think you can find brass or stainless flat or oval head machine screws, or just some very short wood screws.

Bolt Depot is the best. You can buy a couple or thousands. They have only the best hardware.

3/8 long screws will hold fine and not protrude through. Been there, done that.

Edit: if the flange hole and countersinking is large enough use #6 x 3/8 screws.

your other option is to just ditch the flange, and get a retaining ring that fits. I've even seen flanges used as retaining rings, without the screws, and threaded on from the back of the board (not that I recommend it.)

I have flanges on a couple of my lenses, and they are nice and convenient (easier to mount lenses to than a retaining ring.) though its not like you change lenses on the board very often, so I don't know how worthwhile it is to use flanges over rings.

If you go the wood screw route, just choose a wood screw that fits the flange correctly. In other words size that the head of the screw will fit nicely into the counter sunk hole in the flange. Really thought don’t over think this too much. There are several methods that will work well, just choose the one that is easiest to implement.

I'll also add that I prefer a flange to a retaining ring for thicker wooden boards because I don’t have to route a counter bore in the back of the board for the retaining ring.

I made an adapter lens board for my Agfa Ansco to take Linhof/Wista lens boards, that way I can use my lenses on my Wista 45DX as well as my two 10x8 Agfa Ansco cameras. I made a similar adapter for my Half plate Kodak specialist 2.

Now I can use my 5x4 lenses that cover on the half plate camera or 10x8 if they cover the format.

I took the flange off the old lens board. The holes in the flange seem large enough that a #4 screw might be okay. So I ordered a package of #4 x 3/8" brass wood screws from my Home Depot here. Cost was $3.33. I can always return them if the sizing isn't right.

I have to exchange my screws. I didnt take into account the length of the flange itself, so with the 3/8" screws there isn't much meat left to put into the board. Im getting 3/4" screws to replace these.

Took the old screws back and got some longer #4 x 5/8" ones. All I need now is mount it to the wood board when I receive it from the USA.
