Hello there,

My Fuji GA645 started giving an error message. Looking the camera over I found a broken flat cable inside the lens carriage.
It is not completely torn, just two wires are broken.
This fits the problem: the camera turns on fine, but when one fires the shutter, the shutter itself does not open and the error message kicks in.

I searched the web for a way to fix flat cable, but they are not possible in such a tight space.

I sent the camera to Fuji here in Brazil and got it back along with a letter telling me it is a great paper weight.

I searched a few camera parts stores on the web and found no parts for this camera.

Before I attempt to disassemble the entire camera and seek out a similar flat cable to replace this one, does anyone have a better idea? Knows somebody who sells these parts? Knows a place where they fix these cameras?

Thanks for reading!

Frank Marshman, who worked on my GA645 when the LCD needed cleaning, and knows these cameras well, said the weakness of many of them, like my GA645zi, is that ribbon cable. He says once that frays or breaks its over. No official parts available. Perhaps you can find some third party solution or a broken other one with a good ribbon cable but otherwise I think the news is not good.

I don't know what your problem looks like. A ribbon cable is simply a quick way to make electrical connections between two points. On some old ribbon cables, it is possible to bypass the cable with a jumper wire. Solder a wire in-between the two end points, often on the bottom side of the connector block where it re-connects to a circuit board? Well, just a thought.

Hello;
Ribbon cables are used in laptop computers. I would junk out a non working sony for a source. Use a low wattage soldering iron and very fine tip when attempting repairs, Steven.

I don't think it's a ribbon cable. It sounds more like a polyimide etched copper flexible interconnect.

If it was mine I would repair it or make another one... but I do have the advantage of working for a company which makes these things!

What he said. But! They can be jumpered. If a bit of the protective flex is scraped off a jumper can be soldered to the exposed lands.
There ain't much there. go lightly.

Yep. I've seen photos of a Pentax connector of this type with a jumper wire soldered in place. It went over the front of the pentaprism and it is common for the metal 'ribbon' to fail at the slight bend.
