Andrew - lovely shot. To my less than expert eye, it looks similar to my pyro result with which I'm not that happy. Mid tone separations don't look as dramatic to me as your (or my) shots w/ FP4 or HP5, which has had me also searching for the 'magic' developer w/ Acros. PyroHD 1:100, D-76, HC-110 have given a similar look. The Rodinol (R09) 1:100 has been as good or better than anything so far, exposing at ei50. I'm very drawn to the reciprocity of Acros - shooting interiors - but I want those tones to pop. I haven't seen it happen yet w/ Acros. The barn & memorial shots recently were with Acros(ei50)/Rodinol.

Thanks! I believe you are doing the right thing by exposing at EI50. Mid tone separation is much better.

I shot a few rolls of Acros, and used Paterson developers. It's awesome stuff! I suggest EI64 for best results.

I am willing to bet most people have never compared and tested developers closely, matching the contrast on the same film. I have. Rodinal is the worst developer in the universe.

Acros 100 in Rodinal 1+25 is pretty contrasty but looks ok:

Andrew, Thank You! As you know, I listen to your thoughts w/ great care. My FP4 shots seem like they need more density also, so I'll try ei50 at least once with it. I *do* love the tones of FP4/HP5. The reciprocity is a bugger sometimes.

Probably, but I have. Rodinal, like every developer out there, has its strength's and its weaknesses.

Reciprocity certainly can drive one nuts with certain films ...I've used those FP4 and HP5 for so long now that it's memorized (same compensation for both films, too!) but since I started trying out Acros, I've found it very difficult to not have to apply any exposure compensation! It'll take a while to train my brain, that's for sure!

Not even close.

Water is significantly worse as a developer. Leaves you with very poor tonal separation.

And beer, too, is worse. It uses beer that could otherwise be drunk.

Maybe Rodinal comes third.
