Hello all

I am about to set off on a holiday in Italy (Umbria, Le Marche). I may get a choice of petrol or diesel when I pick up the hire car. Can anyone advise me what the current prices of each are?

cheers

Most of the cars in Italy are small for obvious reasons, I wouldn't be concerned too much about fuel prices, just enjoy the place. Umbria is the least developed area in Italy, AFIK, very picturesque as is neighboring Tuscany. I was there a few years ago, it's one of my favorite parts of Europe, second only to Sicily. Also, the people there drive very fast - but no road rage - a reason why there are so many race car drivers from Italy.

Bring lots of film.

1.48 or higher.

Some people drive fast but many don't. Plus slow traffic keeps right. They even move over in advance.

To the OP a diesel is the usual choice. Normally diesel is cheaper but not at the moment. But diesel cars tend to get better gas mileage. It also depends on what you're used to. A tank of gas gets me 1100 km. Not bad for 47 litres.

Nick,

I like to drive fast, but in Italy I was one of those that moved over in advance, my car was under powered. After about 10 days driving though, I was driving more like the fast drivers as my driving skills improved.

I can remember looking in my rear view mirror waiting to see no cars coming up behind me so I could pass someone, and before I completed the pass someone was on my rear bumper flashing their lights. I wondered how they could be there so quickly. It was wild and exciting. The drivers there are generally different from where I live, they're more friendly on the road. I loved Italy and the people.

Outside of one idiot in an Audi I don't think I've seen any head games. It's nice. Safer and less stressful. It does take a bit to get used to seeing on coming traffic in your lane and them expecting you to squeeze right -)

Thanks Nick. Yes, I know it is expensive, and having been there several times I am familiar with the unique excitements of driving in Italy. What I wanted to know was the relative price (here in Australia lack of refining capacity has driven the price of diesel much higher than petrol).

Sounds like I will go for the diesel option.

cheers

For the real road rage thrill, cross the Alps and drive on the Autobahn in Germany. :munch: :D
