For Sale FS: Zone VI 4x5 Field camera + Zone VI tripod

Dear APUG members,

Here is for sale my Zone VI 4x5, made in Vermont. It's in great cosmetic and mechanical condition. The wood doesn't show scratches, dings or dents. The gold plating shows some patina here and there. Overall, the camera is a pleasure to use. It's well made, has plenty of movements and is very sturdy. I just got a 5x7 which has a 4x5 back, so it makes no sense keeping this one.
Bellows are light tight. I will include 2 Zone VI lens boards (I believe copal 0 and 1). Lens is not included.
I will ship the camera in a Zone VI bag. The bag's inside has seen some use, but it is very convenient

As I'm also looking for some equipment. I could as well trade the camera vs large format lenses, 5x7 holders, medium format bodies (Hasselblad 501 body, Fuji G670 - one can dream a bit...)

I also have a Zone VI wooden tripod with a Bogen 3047 head. The tripod looks close to new, it has not seen a lot of use. Metal spikes on the feet. Extremely sturdy. Comes in a "beautiful" burgundy bag

Hey, here is one. There's not much to say about it. It's big and mean. You probably can hunt with that thing. If it doesn't sell, I'll keep it to fend off zombies.
I don't really know which of the Zone VI tripod it is. It has a Bogen 3047 head. It shows very little sign of use

It's the Zone VI Lightweight tripod. The Zone VI Heavy-Duty tripod is a monster. I have the heavy version and it handles a Calumet C1 8x10 Black Beast with ease. It also flattens out the rear springs in my truck when I stow it...

Hey Ken! Thank you. Considering how big and heavy that one is already, I can't imagine how sturdy the heavy duty must be.

My suggestion, go to a bicycle shop and ask them for a box, and cut it down as needed. The boxes are very sturdy, usually 3 layer cardboard.

My new water heater came in a three layer cardboard box, very strong,fold it to make a triangular tube with this stuff it will protect any tripod .

So yesterday I put my new-to-me Cambo 8x10 (weight 9kg without lens nor holder) on my nice carbon Vanguard AltaPro 283CT (weight rating 8kg), and no prizes for guessing: it wobbled like some metaphor involving a fat lady.

So now I'm in the market for a nice sturdy 8x10 tripod, preferably just platter-top with no column, weight rating at least 20kg; given that it has to hold an 8x10 monorail, weight and size are not as important as sturdiness.
Even if this one is already gone, where can I find info on Zone VI? Googling doesn't seem to be turning up much, are they still around?

I think Zone VI is long gone. The tripods pop up from time to time on Apug or LFF. For a wooden one i would also look at Berlebach, though they're kind of expensive.

The tripod is sold pending paiment.

Zone VI has been gone for a long time, sold by Fred Picker to Calumet many years ago, themselves now gone as well. But my Zone VI Heavy-Duty tripod and the 8x10 will easily outlive me.

Weren't the Zone VI tripods just re-purposed maybe slightly adapted surveyor tripods? Not that this is a bad thing, but it might be a way to find one now.

You might ask over at the Large Format Photography Forum for advice on a good tripod to hold a 9kg 8x10 monorail.

My cynical but real world experience has been that load ratings by manufacturers (this comes more from astronomy and mounts for telescopes but can be applied to cameras as well) are quite optimistic and if you want and need it to be nice and sturdy should, in general, be roughly halved for real world use.

Yes, I believe the heavy-duty ones were, based on observing roadside construction sites as I drove by. But they are as stable and rugged as one would ever need for a large camera. Just don't try backpacking with one.

You could repurpose a good survey tripod, I should think. Enough available around.

In my search for a locally available tripod, spoke to a tripod manufacturer recently(survey tripods) and the tripods range upto those that can support 30kilos. Made of teak wood and with metal shoes.
The version next to it - rated for half the weight (I think) is about 6 kilos he said -didnt feel heavier than my Toyo Monorail though.
