Many years ago, now, I took one of Ron Mowrey's early photo emulsion making classes. Afterwards, I purchased a bunch of stainless steel coating rods to experiment with. Before I got around to using them, however, Ron came out with his coating rod, and then Dennis came out with her rod. I never used the stainless ones.

So, here they are for your pleasure and coating enjoyment. There are five rods. Each is 1/2" SS in diameter and 16" long. They have different thickness SS wire wrapped around them, with a working area of 12".

These rods are a product of https://www.rdspecialties.com/. The rods are marked RDS02, RDS04, RDS06, RDS08, and RDS10. The coarsest rod, RDS10, has about 100 wrappings per inch. The other rods are wrapped progressively finer. I can't tell you how thick a coating these rods will create, but what I remember reading is that it should be about 90% of the wire diameter. Hey, remember this was an unperformed experiment, so I can't be more accurate than that.

What are these rods worth? I dunno. New ones seem to cost $57 apiece. Did I really spend $250+ for these things? Can't recall.

So, let's start this offering off at $100, plus shipping. These suckers are heavy SS, so shipping is going to be via USPS Large Flat Rate Box @ $18.90.

Thanks, Mark.

Yes, Mr. Mayer patented them back in the 1880's, AIR. I seem to also recall that Kodak used them for coating photo paper.
