I've had this SA 165mm for quite a few years now and used it on my Century Universal 8x10 with color and B&W film. It's a remarkable lens with great coverage on 8x10. If you like wide on 8x10 this a good choice. It's in a compur shutter that's been CLAd summer 2014 and works perfectly.
The elements are very clean, the front is beautiful and the back is beautiful except that it has two very small scratches. I couldn't find one of them but I know it's there somewhere and the second is also very small and difficult to photograph. You'll see it right above the ceiling light reflection in one of the pictures. The biggest is about 1.5 millimeters and the smallest is a lot smaller.
As far as I could tell there were two types of this early version of the lens made. One was "permanently" fixed to the shutter and needed removal of the front lens element to change the shutter. This was by far the most common type. The second, this one, comes off the shutter just like most modern large format lenses so the shutter could be swapped easily. The shutter works flawlessly, however, but it's good to know it could be changed in a pinch.
