Pages are waterproof provided you use pencil to write on the paper (for ink, you need to use one of their pens).
The small binder is small enough to bring along for taking notes in the field; pages are large enough to note detailed notes; the binder design makes it easy to remove pages, like when you need to consult the notes in just one page while developing/printing a particular negative.
I use the larger notebooks in the Darkroom without having to worry that the paper will get wet and become illegible; simply wipe dry - the writing will not smudge.
