'Rescued'?
Years ago, when nice brass lenses were everywhere on eBay and we all had lots of money, I would occasionally spot an auction for a less than perfect lens, usually missing its iris. These were auctions where I expected the dealer to throw the lens into the trash, if no one bid on it. Rather than let that happen, I would match the opening bid, as long as it was reasonable. I won a number of those auctions, and have tried to put the lenses back into service, usually mounting them into a shutter.
Offered here is a 155mm f/12.5 Bausch & Lomb Anastigmat - a Series IV Protar, made under license from Zeiss, i.e, before the Great War. The lens comes with an adapter to front-mount it onto a Copal 3 shutter. Also included are two machined inserts which function as waterhouse stops. A mounting flange, mounted onto a 4"x4" board, is also included.
The glass is decent, for a lens that's been around a century. There are the inevitable cleaning marks and a couple of small pinpricks, but nothing I consider significant. See the sample pictures, and you be the judge. Satisfaction guaranteed, of course. Return it (at your expense) for any reason, for a full refund.
The iris was removed from this lens, so I machined a couple of brass inserts to go inside, where the iris should have been. You have to unscrew either the front or rear cell to put them into the middle of the barrel. With no idea of what the proper aperture should be, I just made one opening 0.300" and the other 0.100". Below are a couple of pictures made with this lens. One is made with no insert, the other with the 0.100" insert. Both photos are quite good. The first, made without insert, was shot at 1/8 sec. The second, with the 0.100" insert, was shot at 1 sec. (3 stops). The wide open photo was a bit underexposed, while the 0.100" was perfect. I did adjust them both in PS.
The sample photos are 8x10 negative scans. As you can see, the lens covers 5x8 easily, but vignettes on 8x10.
I have also made a lenscap for this lens, and it is included in the sale.
