Hello all!
Here is a very nice Nikon FM in all black.
This camera is in great shape, just a little bit of dust from sitting on a shelf.
She is really looking for someone to take her out for walks on the beach.

I'm including a 50mm f1.8 Nikkor series E and a MD-11 motor drive.
Everything works great, but the seals of course need to be replaced.
135$ in the US.
Thanks for looking.

Oh man what a beauty. If I did not already have 6 Nikon bodies I'd be all over this.

A novice's question: How much does it cost to replace the seal? Can it be replaced by a such user (is it stupid-proof?, my favourite catchphrase )?

Bests,

It is easy postcard, mouse mat, double sided pressure sensitive tape, craft knife, kebab skewer, scissors...
Block the shutter gate with card so debris does not enter shutter... measure foam thickness before you do anything, sketch the areas with foam ...

Alternatively get a kit from John Goodman

Local shop replaced mine for FE for $50.00.

If you plan to use the camera, I would just plan for a CLA. That would include cleaning inside and out, re-lubing all mechanisms, new seals and mirror bumper, adjusting the shutter back to factory specs, and any minor repairs they find necessary. Well worth it for any camera you hope to use.

Garry's Camera Repair provides these services for under $60 (last time I had one done). They do good work and turn-around time was about a week or 10 days.

With the price offered here, you will be well under $200 for a really nice outfit.

By the way, the FM/FE line of cameras are GREAT - I have quite a few of them. The FM2 was my first "real" camera back in the early 80's. Bought it new, but it was stolen. Have more than made up for that loss since then.

I would just source the foam from Jon Goodman. Precut, right foam. Perhaps not idiot proof, but yes - stupid-proof (for proof of that - I've done 3 or 4 different bodies with Jon's kits).

Is it still available?

Only 6?

Go for it, Rich!

Stop it! I'm subscribed to this thread and find myself thinking about each time until I slap myself! Isn't two F2, an F3, FM2, FE2 and an N80 enough Nikon bodies? Well, at least for now?

Oh he'll no!

It is if I include my Contax SLR collection too. And I just got a Canon F1 for some reason. And let's not discuss my RFs or medium format collections!

Actually I should probably sell some...

So, has some bought this FM already?!?

FWIW,I just cleaned the old seals out with alcohol and painted the seal grooves with flat black paint ,using a small brush to provide a light trap. I checked it by placing the camera with its back on a light tale and it worked just fine,Som I'm not certain a seal replacement is ever needed.Nikon should have designed this as a light trap to begin with;less cost and more robust;Japanese engineering is overated says this German engineer

Why has it not been sold yet?!

Thanks for sharing this nugget, Ralph. Just out of curiousity, can the same be applicable for FM2n, FM3A bodies?

Bests,

Ashfaque

Ralph, which camera are we talking about? I do know that the F2 and F3 series have a tongue & groove method of sealing the film chamber from light. The foam is used as a dust seal on those cameras. On the Nikkormats, FM, FE, FA, FG, EM, etc, series cameras, the foam provides the light seal.

Anyway, I bet mrred would be interested in the FM, if his meter overhaul doesn't go well.

first test if it needs replacing on many Nikons the film door acts as a liht trap and needs no foam to be light tight.just clean out the residual foam and adhesive and paint the groove flat black is often enough.

yes,definately.actually.some of the newer cameras N70 for example have the film door already designed as a light trap and don't need any foam.well done Nikonbut you should listen to me more often.now, vonvert back to standard cable release attachments.everthing else is just silly.

You can go to your local hobby shop or Walmart and buy a big pack of thin felt cards for about $4. Enough to replace the body seals on about 25 cameras. Replacing them is easy. Plenty of stuff on the web for doing it yourself.
