This is my Howtek D4000 drum scanner in great condition. The scanner works as it was designed with no issues. It also looks great cosmetically. I recently changed the scanner belt as well as the quill post O-ring. The drum speed encoder (J-12) and drive motor connectors (J-1) on the control board were professionally changed as these are components most likely to fail. It also has the latest firmware version installed. I’m also including:
1) Digital PhotoLab (DPL) 7.86 scanner software, with dongle and user manual. This is a powerful piece of software that integrates perfectly with the scanner hardware, to take full advantage of it’s capabilities. Having tried and found an alternative program very unstable and much less versatile, I paid for DPL and never looked back. This is the full version of the program and virtually the same (with a few changes) as the latest version.
2) PC with AMD Phenom 9650 quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, running Windows XP 32bit operating system. The PC has a SCSI interface card installed and running smoothly in XP. The PC also comes with an HP L1710 monitor, keyboard and mouse.
3) Drum mounting station with three drums. The drums each come with their own protective sock. Two of the drums have scratches, some deep. I used either of these drums for small and medium format negatives as it is quite easy to find an area of the drum in good condition. The third drum is much nicer, and I used it for 4x5 and 8x10 negatives.
4) I have several scanning supplies and maintenance items, including almost a full litre of Lumina scanning fluid, a scanning fluid spray bottle to apply the fluid, a quarter litre of drum cleaner in a spray bottle, NOVUS drum scratch remover and polisher (recommended by Aztek for Howtek drums), Magnalub Teflon grease, new unopened box of Aztek scanner optical grade mylar (9 x 11 inch, 100 sheets), three-roll tape dispenser with one role each of ½ inch mounting tape, 1 inch mounting tape, and Aztek Tesa ¾ inch tape.
5) I have several spare parts as well. Including 3 drum scanner lamps with their housings (P/N H02230), drum meter label set, one calibration strip, and one drum wear pad set. I’ll also include the old scanner belt and quill post O-ring just in case.
I really don’t want to ship this beast as it’s very heavy. If the buyer arranges for crating and shipping I will facilitate. Aztek does sell a shipping box for this scanner but it is very expensive. I’m reluctant to ship this also because of the danger of damage to the sensitive electronics.
I think it would be in the buyers best interest to come by and see it working. I would be pleased to provide training in the software and scanner operation. It’s actually not that complicated, although mastering the software does take some practice. For example, I’ve found that I get the absolute best scans if I create my own custom CMS (custom media characterization) for every type of negative, and for large format I create a custom CMS with every single negative. So, Ideally the buyer lives within driving distance of Montreal and will come bye to spend a few hours checking everything out.
In any case, the scanner is in great condition and I have no doubt the buyer will be glad to have it. After doing some research on what these things go for I’ve decided to ask for $2200 US net to me. I know this is at the upper end of the range for these things but I do think the condition, software, and accessories justify the price I’m asking. This is a turnkey kit, just plug it in and start scanning. Of course I will consider all reasonable offers. I do prefer that the scanner is used rather than stay here and remain dormant.
If you have questions, want more detailed pictures, prefer that I send along a short video of the scanner in operation, or just want to come by and have a look, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I live in Montreal so not so far from Boston, NYC, Toronto, Buffalo…. Hey, I drove 3600 km (7200 total) to pick up a JOBO processor!
