A few months ago, mentioned that I had picked up a Ilex Universal No 4 shutter (no iris) and the information about what lens might work was very good. Between this information and from what I found on Grimes web site, it would appear that either a 12 inch or 14 inch Artar would be a good choice to Front Mount on this shutter. My question is, if I find one a good price do these mount directly into the shutter or will it still require an adapter of some sort? If it mounts directly into the shutter does anyone have an example (photo) that would show one mounted this way?

As always...Thanks in advance...

You'd need an adapter (BTW - I have both the 12" and 14" Artar lenses). Both of these lenses share a common mount size, so one adapter will work on both. The Artar's mount is considerable smaller than the front cell opening of an Ilex #4, so an adapter should be pretty simple to get made and would work quite well.

Thanks for the input Bob, was hoping there might be a barrel lens that would fit right into the shutters front opening (58.2mm if I measured it right).

I wish that was the case, it would have saved me a hell of a lot of time in the shop making up a box lensboard with a Packard...

I have a 19" Artar RD that does fit in the front threads of an Ilex #4

the lens that came in the Ilex is the Paragon 215 mm, so those threads are apparently the same as the Artar

Even 19" RD Artars may have different threads, depending on if they're brass or aluminium, and if they were later or earlier production brass. SK Gimes has a great information page on front mounting lenses on their website thats well worth checking out. BTW a 19" Artar, either an APO or a RD, is one sweeeet lens!

Thanks for the info guys..now if I could just find a book or website that would give me the info on the Artars  Have studied SK Grimes site on front mounting for months, have a 305 Agfa Super-intergon that I picked up from a member here on APUG, with the hopes of mounting it to the shutter. Have discussed having an adapter made so it will front mount on the Ilex. Will look at the 19" RD Artar and see how it would fit in.

Mike,

I have a 19" RD Artar. If we go shoot tomorrow bring the Ilex#4 and we can try it out. I even have a lensboard drilled for an Ilex#4 flange so we can give it a shot on the 'dorff if it does fit
