I'm organizing a fall group shooting/gathering at Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario on Friday Oct. 13th until Sunday Oct. 15th 2006. This is the weekend following Canadian Thanksgiving. You can stay overnight or just come up for the day... and spouses are welcome.

It's free but you have to cover your own costs and park fee. It's open to anyone who considers themselves a large format shooter.

For more information go to "Algonquingathering" on my website... www.bigcameraworkshops.com

Rob, you only need to start a thread in one forum. Most people will see it.

The colours are always a bit of a gamble.... what they call "peak foliage" is usually around the time of Canadian Thanksgivings but there's not way to tell ahead of time.
I'm going up for sure. Feel free to join me.

Excellent, hope to see you there. In case I shoot more than the # of holders I have, hopefully somebody has a changing tent! This would be my first extended trip with a LF camera.

I'm interested - but how are the fall colours that late in October usually?

The week before or the week after Thanksgiving (Canada) weekend is peak for that area. As Rob said, it's always a gamble. Even if you miss the peak, colours will still last awhile longer.
When the big trees are past prime, the smaller underbrush is often in colour and that makes for some good shots too.

That weekend marks the "official" end of the summer tourist season. One of my favourite times. No tourists to wonder into the shot, and no bugs to swat.
Or is that the other way around...

Thanks Rob, I'll mark the date down but I'm not sure I can make it. I will be up in the park the week before Thanksgiving to do some shooting.

Hey Rob.....I'm having some trouble getting the link or even typing it in the address bar. Is it my lack of digi-savvy? Just wanted to go over dates & locations while I had my Park map out.

Could be the fact that I can't spell my own website properly.
It's www.bigcameraworkshops.com

Also I will bring along a Harrison Changing Tent. Should be large enough for 11x14 and smaller.

I can't make this one, rats. However, I'm guessing the colours will be good. I'm not a huge fan of "peak" Fall colours ... splashes of colour are more interesting to me.

If we get an Indian summer, you can't beat camping in the Park. Some of my best times are around mid-October there. Mew Lake campground is nice as there are yurts for rent and for those who need juice, there are a ton of electrical sites.

For breakfast, Algonquin Inn on Oxtongue Lake had a huge breakfast that I couldn't polish off which doesn't happen often

Ya picked a decent spot with Wolf Den Rob. Visited it a few times and it looked nice.

And if I don't make it up, Oxtongue Rapids Rd. has plenty of potential for high film burnage.

In the early 70's, I spent a few days on a canoe trip in APP. It's a gorgeous place that I fervently hope is as unspoiled today as it was then. The precambrian granite with it's glacial scarring was a completely new experience for me. I wish I could join you, but alas, the work imperative must rule. Have a wonderful outing!

Just a reminder about the gathering at Algonquin on the weekend following the Canadian Thanksgivings Weekend.
The more the merrier.

Algonquin Large Format Gathering Oct. 13, 14, 15
The Large Format Gathering in Algonquin Park is just a week away, and it looks like we're going to hit the fall leaves at the perfect time in Algonquin.

Hopefully the weather will be great as well.

This gathering is open to anyone who considers themselves a large format enthusiasts. You're invited to come whether you have years of experience or are just starting out. In fact if you want to get into large format but don't have a camera I have an extra 4x5 you can use. This is not really a workshop but just a gathering where we can get out shooting, meet people with a common interest and have fun.

This is casual gathering and we can change things as we go but this is how I see it happening..... head to Algonquin on Friday Oct. 13th. Get set-up if you're camping or relax if you're in a hotel or the bunkhouse. We're basing the gathering out of the "Wolf Den Bunkhouse" (wolfdenbunkhouse.com) just west of the west gate on Hwy. 60. That's where I'll be staying and a few others are as well. Alternate choices will be camping in the park, or staying at a lodge in the park, or a hotel in Huntsville. Make your own accommodations.

Things get started on Saturday morning. We're going to meet at the Restaurant of the "Portage Store on Canoe Lake" on Sat. morning. They're in the park about 10-minutes past the West Gate Entrance. They open at 8am and I plan to be there around 8-8.30 for breakfast. You don't have to eat but might as well grab a coffee as we get organized. The plan is to meet around 8.30, get to know a few names and head out shooting in small groups. I hope we can be leaving the Portage Store by 9.30 on Saturday. Shoot for the morning.... meet somewhere to swap notes... go out shooting in small groups.... meet as a large group at the Wolf Den bunkhouse for a pot-luck dinner... show some prints if you like in a casual manner.

On Sunday we'll meet somewhere for a bite..... go out shooting in small groups.... meet to swap notes.... either go out shooting again or head home.

This gives people who don't know the area a chance to hook up with others who do know the area.

The Wolf Den Bunkhouse is just that, a bunkhouse although they do have some cabins as well. On Sat. night we plan to meet there for a common dinner. You can't buy food at the bunkhouse but they have a kitchen where you can cook and ovens. I plan to bring some lazenga and heat it up, if others can bring something that would be great as well. They have a up-stairs loft where we can relax and look at prints.

If you have questions or need to borrow a 4x5, need film etc. just email me... skeoch@sympatico.ca

My apologies, Rob!

A recent injury/corrective surgery brought the curtain down early on my paddling season. I really can't even think of my APP debut without camping & paddling. My best wishes to you and all that attend. Thanks for the inspiration and efforts in organizing my "dream trip"!
