This weekend I wandered into the Robert Mann Gallery in Chelsea (NYC) and came across the photographs of the late Fred Stein. I must admit that I had never heard of him before and was totally unaware of his work, but was really impressed when I saw it. I just wanted to share this with everyone. His portfolios can be found at

It is certainly worth a look.

Yesterday I caught a brand-new documentary on PBS, Out of Exile: The Photography of Fred Stein.

Absolutely worth seeing! I was blown away by his images, especially his 35mm Leica work. He should be as well-known as Cartier-Bresson.

Thanks for resuscitating this old thread, I had never heard of Fred Stein until now. Love his New York series from his website. Will try catch the PBS documentary.

Wow.. Talk about hind-sight and irony.
A jewish, socialist in 1930 Germany gets the cold shoulder from the Dresden elites of Weimar.
He is forced out of his job and moves to Paris.
Circa 1940, the winds of war push him across the water to New York City.
He had no idea HOW Lucky he was.
If he had lingered another 5 years in Germany............ ☹️
