Bacon could make anything look ugly, unlike Avedon who could make anything look beautiful.

Source, please.
maybe its a secret ...
he is well known to have worked from them, and who knows
maybe he figured out how to click a shutter button himself ? to suggest
that he never used a camera or made photographs to work from is kind of absurd...

And this makes Francis Bacon a photographer by using photos as the basis for his paintings? Because light is involved? Because of circular BS?

Pieter....why are you anxious about who is and who is not a photographer?

personally i don't even thing the word photographer means anything anymore, does it ? i mean everyone and anyone makes photographs
whether they are 4months old with mommy and daddy's cellphone, the gorilla at the zoo ( who owns a copyright! ) or anyone else, anyone who
makes photographs is a photographer, right ?

I really don't care who is or isn't a photographer. I question the misleading title of the original post, insinuating that Bacon's was a photographer as well as an extremely talented painter. I am and would be extremely interested in knowing about and seeing Bacon's photography, and feel mislead by an assumption with no basis in reality beyond conjecture.

isn't anyone who picks up a camera a photographer?
im not sure why the title of a post conjurs up such stress..
i figure the thread title was just to get people to click
you know like " weird photographs by francis bacon that the history books don't show" like ads on yahoo's homepage..
we were just silly enough to care if he was an award winning photographer or just someone who like most people over 3years old...
does it matter, nope, its been an interesting conversation..

Some people are into photography and related arts in their own unique ways. Some are not.

My understanding is that, as an art photography is less likely to portray beauty than it is to portray conceptual truths. Photographs of people in stressful situations may be closer to "art" than are scenic photos, for example. Just a thought.

All photos are accurate, none of them is the truth...

Bacon could make anything look ugly, unlike Avedon who could make anything look beautiful.

Avedons spy camera photos of insane asylum inmates proved he could also portray the "ugly". His formal portraits of George Wallace and the like, and of the heroic Dwight Eisenhower in decline, did as well.

Are you sure those are ugly?

Rather than just making cute, shallow comments, perhaps you could step up to the plate and express yourself intelligently.

Avedon's prints are beautiful but some of his portraits were of failing and exhausted people...and a few outright ugly villains..., and of demented people in the kind of place where his sister lived. If one's idea of "beauty" is restricted to conventional photographs of beautiful people.....

OK, you are insulting me. But I don't find the Avedon pictures you mention at all "ugly". Sad, tragic, pathetic, but not ugly. Actually beautiful and touching in a way. But Bacon was clearly working to make his subjects ugly, because unlike Alvedon he was demented. Still, I'm glad you think me cute and shallow.

Arthur...didn't mean to insult you. This is the wrong place to address some differences of perspective. I posted an attempt, then deleted it. Fwiw I'm more interested in Bacon as a photo subject than as a painter...wish I knew more about in his portrait in the OT..

the portrait was made by jorge lewinski ... he was known for photographing 20th century artists in a way that reflected their work.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...ration-of-british-artists-on-film-779776.html

if you click on "more information" you will see additional information too

kind of like art imitating life imitating art sort of thing ...

jnantz, thank you for your two valuable links. Did you know previously about Lewinski or did you doggedly dig them out? Brilliant !

"I made photographs for a reason. I would make a contract to do a book and then go do it. I stopped because there was no reason to continue – I am not an amateur, doing a bit of this and that – and I have no regrets." Jorge Lewinski
