I have my first art showing ever at a local gallery and was curious what people use for frames and mounting options? Is it pretty standard in gallery showings to frame anymore? The gallery doesn't care how I show my work. I have framed and matted photos for my own personal use but nothing beyond. Some recent museums exhibitions I've been to I've seen photos framed with not mat and was curious how this is done without touching the glass. I'm pretty novice when it comes to this so appreciate in any input.

Frames provide a lot of protection for the print, even if they are not archival frames they still keep peoples fingers off the print assuming glass or acrylic is included. Short term it is ok if the glass touches the print, but long term it will eventually get stuck to the print so a museum would never allow that. If you sell one and want it to last much longer then of course you can either re-frame with an archival mat or if you want to avoid the mat you can use a spacer like this: https://www.framedestination.com/framing-supplies/picture-frame-spacers.html

I have seen unmatted, framed prints where there print sits at the back of the frame, 1/2 to 1 inch away from the glass. I have been to galleries that must have magnetic paint on the walls: bare prints are just mounted with small magnets at the corners.

i've participated in shows where people didn't frame anything, didn't mat anything, just put stuff on the wall with thumbtacks.
im probably going to do the same thing in a month... but they won't be fancy archival prints, but other "stuff" ...
