I say ‘found’ in the loosest way as I bought a negative file knowing just what I was getting.

These photos show crowds on Thursday 28th July, 1977, in Arnold, Nottingham, waiting for the Queen and Duke to drive by. They were taken by a professional photographer called Ralph Stephenson who was attached to a camera crew for Independent Television News (ITN). I wonder if Ralph might have been doing stills alongside some other technical work as all the pictures are from some elevated distance.

These three photos are the best, Raph’s hits from the roll. I do think he would have been better off using HP5 rather than FP4 as there is blur in other photos and some quite narrow depth of field. Ralph shot these on a Nikon F with 50 and 135 lenses. Met Office historical data tells us July 1977 was quite cold and cloudy and you can see a few coats out even though it’s fully summer. It’s nice to see the crowds, turning out on a Thursday to see the Queen. Clearly a more deferential time. It may have been factory shutdown week, hence the young men in the crowd.

The negatives are in good condition and it was fun to print these. I’m showing here iPad photos of prints – my only way to digitise photos. The iPad has increased the contrast a bit on these prints, although I did print at grade 4.

Enjoy:

Seems like yesterday to me as in happening very recently but it's really "all our yesterdays" I remember driving through on the M1 in Birmingham with my future wife and father-in-law and it was emblems, flowers, flags and bunting for mile after mile

It really was a major event

Thanks
