I basically do this before I set the camera up in either one of two ways -- squint my eyes real tight...or take off my glasses. I don't seem to need to do it as much as I use to.

I also close one eye to get rid of the separation between near and far objects that is due to seeing in 3D.

I have heard (or read) about painters who sometimes turn the canvas upside down to check the composition as the act of rotating it reduces the image to shapes instead of instantly recognisable objects.

View camera users have that facility built in!

This is why I get such good composition on my Brownie No.2 Cameras. The viewfinders on those are tiny groundglass waistlevel viewfinder things about 8mm x 15mm. You definitely see the overall picture a lot better than any details.
