Sean, this was obviously far too provoking.

Murray,
I met a guy once, When I did a lot of climbing(racquette ball ended that passion), who acted just like the guy you mentioned. He always wore the most garish climbing outfit, used the loudest colored webbing, had a cute little coed he "was teaching" with him, and a full rack of shiny gear slung over his shoulder like he was planning to ascend El-Capitan. I never saw him climb. Everytime I saw him he was on belay barking directions to the coed. never the same coed. I guess there are posers in every hobby.

If you are 'accusing' me of being a poser, why not say so? What do you want to see? I'll be glad to send you some prints so you can judge for yourself.

This is what would finally get the guy to stop: He starts a thread, comes back two hours later, no responses. A day later, no responses. A week later, nobody has responded. Everybody on these forums has taken the bait. Me? I'm headed back to the Contact Printing forum to see what I can find out about photography. Out.

Heck, this happens to a lot of my legitimate questions.

I apologize for my last post and all other posts relating to Mr AgelessLove . Until I learn to play nice, the ZS and shoot landscapes I am imposing a ban on myself.

No, you never entered my mind, but I do like seeing photographs.

You can't ban yourself. That is like military intelligence or jumbo shrimp. It is an oxymoron. You already have egg on your face, that will do

Exactly. To be honest, what I find most disappointing is how quick people are to take the bait. It sometimes seems that some folks are looking for posts by certain 'provocateurs' so that they can jump all over 'em. Who's worse?
Let it drop. Me, I'm here to find out more about the things I'm interested in. If someone else does not share those interests then that's fine, but I don't have much to talk to 'em about - I can find people who don't share my interests anytime

That's why I'm surprised he keeps coming back. Sean: can't the software ban his IP address? If he's on broadband he will almost certainly get the same IP address every time he connects into his ISP.

Bob.

On a point of information, this isn't actually necessarily so. I recently went on to broadband and for technical reasons beyond me I was told I wouldn't have a fixed IP address but it would change each time I logged on. As I close down the machine each time I'm not using it I must get through umpteen IP addresses each week. Guess a lot of people are in the same situation.

Definitely not practical for the simple reason that some of the big names in the tech industry (yahoo comes immediately to mind) discriminate against people who post to online forums. That is, employees who post to an online forum such as this or, p-net or, rec.autos.makers.vw.watercooled are subject to "disciplinary action"...even though the posts were done on the person's own time and with the person's own computer. Those same companies will NOT hire any one who has posted to an online forum. I know...this seems incredible. Unfortunately, it is all too real and true. To me, the ability to post anonymously is essential....I'll try to keep the male bovine fecal matter to a minimum.

Whilst not necessarily so, it is common. When you log off, your IP address is usually held and is only allocated to another PC if the ISP is running short of addresses as others log on (RADIUS & DHCP protocols). Admittedly, that is getting more likely these days as the number of required IP addresses increases. Even if he gets different IP addys they will all be within a limited range so it should be possible for the software to block a range of IP addresses, though this may block legitimate users from the same ISP. Worth a try blocking the single address though, just in case. Of course there are ways around this but probably too much hassle & requires specialized knowledge to do.

Despite logging on/off, sometimes for a week when on holiday, I've had the same IP address since my cable was installed over a year ago... Next time you log off, check your IP address and then have a look next time you log on - you may be surprised (or not, knowing my luck ).

Cheers, Bob.

Perfect! I actually thought of registering on APUG with the handle "Ottavio Spumoni III" and introducing myself as God, but thought better of it.

Please Ornello

Not Bugs Bunny. Daffy Duck is a good choice. I am a dog lover but I guess Goofy would work.

An old fart wonders whats up?

Mr Blansky, It is my bad smell that offends you? Do you think my odor was sweeter when I was a newly hatched fart? My camera is only a teenager.

Pondering the time invested to scent mark such a wide varity of forums staggers my mind. Imagine if that effort, time, and dedication were directed towards creating art.

How about the option to choose which forum categories you are interested in seeing in the "new posts" list?
For one, I would love to escape all the LF nonsense and the LF weirdos...

This thread itself is "provoking".

Why don't we ALL imagine that the insulating distance and protective anonymity DOES NOT EXIST.
Imagine that we are holding a glass of wine at an Artists reception, and talking bout her/his work ... or that we are sitting at a table schmoozing over cups of coffee (tea, if you prefer).

Much of the vitriolic rhetoric here would simply "not fit". I'm SURE that the last thing anyone would want would be would be to either insult or hurt the person we are talking with; and we would not want to risk a terrible shouting match or emotional "scene". Yet, here on APUG ... we - correct that - some of us - seem to throw all civility to the winds, and claim that we are only being "courageous", when hiding behind distance and anonymity is really the apex of cowardice.

Gang, sacrifice the sport of insulting and demeaning others with the intent of deriving great pleasure from seeing him/her "dancing on a string", trying desperately to salvage a little of his/her self image.
We are all ... or at least we all SHOULD be - passionate about our work. It is incomprehensible to me that we should allow it to be attacked, or that we should allow ourselves to be attacked, and NOT react.

Yeah, yeah ... "We are only being honest." This is an example directed to me through personal e-mail - from my Netscape address - not APUG PM:

He Who Will Be Anonymous: Why did you remove all your color work from the Critique Gallery - I have not seen it.

Ed Sukach: I have my reasons (Not relevant here).

HWWBA: But I need to comment about them! You are a COWARD for removing them.

ES: As you will. I have the RIGHT to remove them - for any reason.

HWWBA: They are BAD photographs. You are a hopelessly BAD photographer. Why don't you consider giving up photography altogether? (Note 1)

ES: How can you say that my work is "Bad"? (ignoring what he claimed was not a personal attack) - When you haven't seen my work? Huh? How can you?

HWWBA: Well, those weren't my words... I'm only repeating the consensus here.

If this was "face to face", I'd probably burst out laughing. With the distance insulation ... I can only be silent, not wanting to add fuel to this.
What about it, gang? ... is anyone able to think of the next line in this witty repartee?
I did what I would do in an uninsulated social situation ... mumble something about "Interesting Opinion" (which translates to ... no, I won't write it ...) and walk away.

Why don't we do the same here, when encountering some of this inflammatory beef by-product?

Note 1: No, I'm not exaggerating. Edited only for brevity. Actual words.
This is supposed to be constructive criticism? When do we see an example of "destructive"?

Maybe there should be a psychological profilling exam before one becomes a member of APUG?

Examples:

- Somebody makes a negative comment about your artistic/technical/political/religious/musical beliefs. You:
a. Flame the hell out of the offender
b. Ignore the offender
c. Pick up and leave APUG
d. Engage in a civil and low tone conversation
e. Find their real address and send them envelopes of anthrax and/or pin their pet on the front door

- In the mention of the word "digital" you:
a. Foam in the mouth and ache in the stomach
b. Cheer and dance around
c. Remain calm and passive
d. Find their real address and send them envelopes of anthrax and/or pin their pet on the front door

- When bored you:
a. Play with your fingers and toes
b. Never get bored
c. Find something creative to do
d. Melt in front of the TV/Computer
e. Find someone's real address and send them envelopes of anthrax and/or pin their pet on the front door

- Apart from photography you enjoy:
a. Photography
b. Digital photography
c. Torturing animals and old ladies
d. Cooking
e. Sex
f. _________ (fill in)

and so on
