Hi all,

If you are interested in a bulk roll film for the purpose of for example, for cutting lengths for the 220 format, and you are willing to join our group, to share experiences and to help each other, or you just want to have fun, this could be for you: Our group from Bohemia and Slovakia managed to source a material (BW, ISO 100) and devised a tool and process to divide it, roll it into smaller portions, mark lengths for better tangling in the dark and pack to distribution in a very small quantities. We now discuss the experience of how to handle the film strip in the conversion to final rolls of 120 or 220. There are still several roles in the length of 25m, that we can provide to some.

So, if you are interested, please PM me.

For general information, see: http://www.temnakomora.cz/topic/13324-svitek-v-metráži/
(sorry, it's not English)

I'm thinking about creating a group here at Photrio to share the experience and help each other. However, this requires that there will be some interest.

Disclaimer: this is not a commercial offer. No one in our group has profited from this activity.

I considered getting a film slitter to repackage 70mm into 120, the availability of 70mm film I've found is sparse.

Yes please, lets start a group.

I roll my own 120 and 220 from 70mm and it's a four step processes involving a lot of in and out of changing bags. There's gotta be a better way.

I know there is not much available stock of 70mm but something is better than nothing. I've got to feed my cameras somehow ya know? I bulk load my 35mm and 16mm/110 why not self roll my 120/220 too? Savings are even more substantial than other formats, very much so. Backing paper seems to be my next bottleneck.

Thank you all for the support!

I went through several threads about accesibility of 220 length and got a feeling, that this would be the main reason for cutting own rolls. Other could be low cost, but considering costs for packaging and shipping cost, I am in doubt.

What expectation do you have?

We could share the 25m of current roll for about 65-70 US$ which only cover direct costs (calculations are always agreed before), and do not cover time and some transport costs spent by our members. This calculation also does not cover the cost of the spool, which is our current problem No2 (we have one member who was willing to make these on 3D printer for free, as I was told, but we cannot expect that he would be doing it for future). The No1 is a number of participants in this bulk purchase. You can imagine that unless we have used the current roll of 600 m, we would have problems to cover costs of the next bulk roll.

Yes please, lets start a group.

The group idea would be fine for the experience sharing. You have yours with 70mm rolls, we can add ours (maybe translating some hints from the forum temnakomora.cz). We could mayby organise a bulk puchrase. I made a look at groups and found that these are not frequently used.

Is this topic viable?

Good topic.

I'm sure there are people out there who hand roll 120/220 from 70mm that have good advice for those of us just starting out with it.

Forming a group for people willing to roll their own 120 film here or on FB or? will be useful idea.
Personally I slit and roll 70mm film to 120 only for testing purposes. It's way easier than dealing with longer 70mm loads and bigger magazine. It's also more economical (at least with Hasselblad A70).
Offer from Ilford for 70mm film in their ULF run are in line with their 120 prices, so that route does not make any sense for me.
Petrik is your bulk 120 roll from Foma and what speed?
For sourcing 120 spindles (is that right name?) and backing paper, the best way are professional labs and people who regularly use and process 120 and throw that away. I always feel guilty when I'm throwing in recycling 120 leftovers

To Nokton48: Thank you!

Now, I started this thread to invite other participants. This would help us finance other similar bulk purchases. We still have some rolls of 120 material left from the first batch. You can contact me if you have an interest. If we repeat this action, I will announce it here.

For the sharing experience, it now seems to me that the groups are a little off the main interest of photrio readers. There are many of them, and there is almost no activity in them. My current feeling is that we should start a thread titled for instance "Post your solution for use of your 220 backs here" (inspired by threads started by Sirus Glass ...).
