I just bought one from our own John Koehrer and used it for the first time tonight. All I can say is, I can't believe I pried that damn lid off with my fingers for two years.

Worth every penny.

Just don't close the lid to tightly.
I did that in the beginning and I often ended up with it flying like a rocket after pumping the large 50x60cm tank for atleast five minutes.

I am going to disagree. I could never get the foot pump to work to get the lid off. I can get it off quicker and easier with my fingers.

The pump works great but I find that I seldom need it. It is a godsend though when you do need it.

Maybe we should sue Jobo for not putting a large warning sign on the pump or the tanks and BeRichQuick.

I adapted a tire valve stem (the thing placed in a car wheel rim) by wrapping it with rubber tape, and then using a small bicycle pump to presurize the expert drum. Since I have to hold it in position while I'm pumping, the lid never flies off.

I use the foot pump to remove the lid from my tank, and have found that the safest way to avoid damage to me and the unit is to wrap a large towel around the lid. When the lid pops off, the weight of the towel prevents it from flying off.

The lid won't fly off if you fill the tank with water first. Air is so spongy that after the lid is free, the air blows it off. With water in the tank, it won't 't do this. Another trick to make it easier is to pour a little warm water over the top of the tank before taking it off. This will loosen the top by making it a little bigger. And one last idea: instead of the foot pump, put a hose with a stopper or cork on it from your water faucet to your tank. Use the water pressure to blow it off. Works just fine.

I sure would like to know how to get that foot pump to pop the lids off with near-lethal force. It might be worth it to save my fingernails and fingertips and I promise I won't sue JOBO. My own experience is that the lids are almost impossible to get off, whether I use my fingers or I use the pump. I have even thought of altering the insides of the lids so that they don't fit as tightly. Love my 3000-series tanks, though. Especially the expert drum for 4X5 film.

how to remove cog?

a related question - anyone know how to remove a cog from a jobo lid so it can be used inversion? I saw a post suggesting destruction using a dremel but is there a technique to pry it loose?

I just keep my hand on top of the Jobo lid so the lid doesn't fly off when I pump it. It normally takes ONE pump with my foot to open a 3010 drum or similar size, and the big 3005 drum takes two. Don't pump too fast, and don't jam the rubber stopper in too tight so you form a seal. That's in part what makes it rocket off the drum.

When I am removing the lids to my JOBO tanks, I stand with the tank on the floor between my bare feet and am able to easily remove the lids by gently pulling on opposing sides with my hands and if necessary, turn the tank 90 degrees and repeat.
