Hello, does anyone know if the heavy texture base is still available?

MG CLASSIC CHAMOIS
(Variable Contrast, Fiber-Base, Warm-Tone)
Warm-tone, triple-weight, variable contrast B&W paper on a cream fine-art, fiber base. Chamois (542) surface.
Available in sizes from 5x7 to 20x24

The chamois paper has a heavily-textured base, similar to watercolor paper. Excellent for fine-art applications and handcoloring.



I've read a bit on the net that it may be discontinued. I've contacted my local Foma person and he is getting back to me.
 
The 542 was discontinued and replace with 542II. Still described as chamois. I haven't used it, so, no info as to how it compares with the old type. Available at Freestyle.

The 542 was DISCONTINUED some time ago because the paper was no longer manufactured. 542II is the replacement, but I don't think it's as textured as the original was as it's a different paper base (so I've heard - I've tried the 542 but haven't had a chance to try the 542II yet).

Why don't you try it to see if it's what you are looking for?
 
Maybe if there's someone out there who has tried the 542II they could let me know how much, if any,of a rough texture there is.
 
I've done that, he said he'll get back to me on Monday but I don't know how much he knew about the two bases.

I would best desciribe the finish as "egg shell" - very very slight texture and semi/almost matt sheen.

I don't know of any heavily textured papers currently available

The "egg shell" description fits very well. I don't know if using water colour paper and liquid emulsion would get you a bit closer to the texture you are looking for? Last paper that I know of that had texture was (not sure of the exact name here) Kentmere Document or Art Classic.
 
This is a real shame. I wonder if anyone has any of the old stuff for sale.
It mustn't have been very popular.
 
The replacement "chamois" surface is very reminiscent of the old Kodak pearl surface, which I do not find all that attractive.

The older one - 532/542 - had what I'd call a hot press finish, as a watercolor paper. I loved that one. The new one - 532ii/542ii - does indeed have more of a sheen, eggshell sounds about right to me.

Emulsion is the same on both the 532 and 542, it is only the base which is different.

This might come in handy- though I see it is not completely current. I'd also suggest contacting FOMA directly, they are quite helpful.
