Foma 400 in 4x5?

I am very sceptical about your statement that they could not coat this film in their plant... Really.

I am just stating that I don't think they could justify the engineering required to transfer the ISO 400 film to another film base (sheet film base) in todays declining film market I hope I am wrong.

Yes, the Speed Graphic 45 is a great camera for shooting 4x5 hand held. I shoot moving subjects with it framing with the sports finder (little wire frame) and it works great. Don't knock it if you have not tried it. I shoot trains moving at 60-70 mph handheld.

A speed will handle 4x5 hand held, it's just not my cuppa tea. I always put it on a tripod.

Steph, seems you have a box of APX100 sitting around that you could be learning with. Cheap at twice the price. As far as HP5 in Diafine, I never cared for that combo, but I respect your vision. Why don't you still use Diafine with the 4x5 sheet film version? Persoanlly I use HP5 (2.25x3.25) with Wd2d+ @ between 250 E.I. and 400 ISO. Nice.

I agree that the selection of 400-speed sheet films is poor.

It is way worse with color. There is only ONE, and it is not one with which I am really in love. I would much prefer to have Fuji Pro 400H than Kodak 400NC. IMO, it is better and cheaper. However, you gots to make do with what's there, and this fact has never killed a project of mine, but instead has forced me to find creative ways to compromise.

Instead of looking for a film that is, for instance, 50% cheaper than HP5 or Tri-X, what you can do is shoot 50% less trash. At about $1.00 a sheet, I am not complaining about the cost of HP5 4x5!

Glad to know another Silicon Valley silver shooter!

I am in San Jose but I leave San Jose quite often to chase trains. One of my favorite shots was taken with a Speed Graphic from the back seat of a friends Chevy Nova (yes, a LONG time ago) as we were pacing a train going at least that fast near Tracy, CA. I was inserting, flipping and removing sheet film holders like a demon as I was trying to time shots between telephone poles. Yes, I got one. Thanks to having ISO 400 4x5 sheet film and a friend as crazy as me, I made that photo.

For those out their who may know trains; it was a Union Pacific directors special with E-units on the point.

When you hite the icon for the film in either 35mm or 120 size it says it will be available in 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10. This is the first time I saw it........

very soon ultrafine / photowarehouse will be making an announcement
of their sheet films. there should be 2 speeds .. 400 and slower.

about 3 months ago they said " in about 3 months " and a few weeks
ago when i called, they were gearing up for it ...

from what i understand they will make an announcement here (they are a sponsor/advertiser).

just make sure you say: "cut and notched for FILM HOLDERS " when you order it, because film is not really the size of the holders ...

( format names and their holders reflect the PLATE size, film is a smaller size because of the sheath that was needed to convert the plate holder to a film holder .. )

I've never used it, I only had a look at the data sheet of the manufacturer. The information there reveals quite a lot though...

It seems that the best developer (the one that will give you the most speed) is Xtol. If used straight it will give you slightly less than 250 ISO. You can get 250 ISO, but the contrast index will be 0,7. Ouch! Anyway, have a look for yourself PHOTONE.
