I agree that the selection of 400-speed sheet films is poor.
It is way worse with color. There is only ONE, and it is not one with which I am really in love. I would much prefer to have Fuji Pro 400H than Kodak 400NC. IMO, it is better and cheaper. However, you gots to make do with what's there, and this fact has never killed a project of mine, but instead has forced me to find creative ways to compromise.
Instead of looking for a film that is, for instance, 50% cheaper than HP5 or Tri-X, what you can do is shoot 50% less trash. At about $1.00 a sheet, I am not complaining about the cost of HP5 4x5!
