Page One at least

We all have heard about the end of Polaroid film, but on today's Boston Globe Page One is a photo of Suzanne Revy illustrating a story about the subject. This alone should provoke a spike in circulation. And the Globe's photo is taken by one of my own personal favorite Globe photogs, Joanne Rathe.

Bill... Joanne was great, I had a lot of fun with her, though I found it a little intimidating to be photographed by someone with as much experience as she has.

That said, she had a very spare style, not too much gear, and she simply got to work. She was very professional, and I wasn't too horrified at how I looked!!

Interesting numbers about around 240000 instant cameras sold last year. I guess that puts into perspective the type of market for instant integral films, like Polaroid 600 or Fuji Instax. Also nice to read that Fuji is becoming flooded with interest. The Fuji Instant peel apart films are really quite nice, and with good quality control; despite that they may not manipulate very well.

Guess at just over two packs of Polaroid 600 per camera buyer, then maybe a bit over half a million total packs sold last year, though maybe better given other camera owners from prior years. That might put some perspective onto a potential market. Considering what an ad campaign runs, and how that cuts into profits, could Fuji afford to try selling Instax cameras and film outside Japan?

At least with Fuji peel apart, it is easy enough to get. It would be nice if they offered more choices to fit the Fuji PA-45 or Polaroid 550 holder.

Let's launch a campaign to save Polaroid or atleast get Ilford or Fuji to continue producing the same types of film. I cannot believe how shortsighted the company is to stop making film like this.

A big thanks from me as well!

I find it very interesting that many law agencies and other groups still use Polaroids to document things. While I come from the digital camp, I should have known about the heavy manipulation done to digital images. Heck, you can even scan in a film negative and manipulate that in photoshop as well! It seems like instant film is crucial to certain lines of work.

I remember once I discovered that someone had broken into the offices in our department, or perhaps attempted to do so, since it seemed that nothing of consequence was stolen, and it's not as if we had any information that would have been of much direct economic value. It was obvious that someone tried to jimmy the doors, so someone from security came down and tried to get a good photo of the damaged door jambs, and he didn't seem to understand that his Time-Zero camera wouldn't focus any closer than about 3 feet.
