I have a sb-15 and sb-16, both have a ttl setting but both give an eer reading on my N90s, what am I doing wrong, do I need a particular flash unit for the N90s?

Does the flash work correctly on your other Nikon cameras , or is the F90s the only film Nikon you have ?
Have you read the manual for both the flash and the camera ?
Have you used other flashes successfully on the F90s ?

Your O.P is lacking in information .

Flash works in A1, A2, MD on my F3 and FM2n and on my N90S, Its only in the TTL slot that it doesnt work and neither does my sb-16

The SB-15 and SB-16 should be compatible. If you want a somewhat more advanced TTL flash the SB-24, 25, 26, 28 are all compatible and very cheap now. In TTL mode, the flash and camera communicate and will complain if you have settings that are not compatible with TTL operation. My guess is that somehow you have set a combination of aperture, shutter speed, mode (PSAM), or distance that won't allow correct exposure and that may be why it's complaining.

So the flash won't work in TTL mode with any camera , not just the 90s ?
Was it working TTL on the F3 ?

Check all the contacts are clean , if so , it might be a wire inside the flash that has come astray.
Do other flashes work correctly in TTL mode on your cameras or do you just have this one flash ?
Again , without knowing what your doing , what you've tried what cameras and flash combinations you've tried , it's hard to guess what's going wrong .

The flash works on everything but ttl, the N90S is the only camera that utilizes ttl. the F3 does but with an adapter that I dont have

On one of my Nkon cameras the SB-28 TTL wouldn't engage until the flash is locked in place. It was from the contacts being dirty.

The manual said the SB-15 and SB-16b are compatible to the N90s. I don't have the N90 but I have both of those flashes and I know they don't work in TTL with the F5 but perhaps the F5 is quite different.

It also depends on what lens you are using. See Page 113 of the manual. If you are using an older manual focus lens you may want to try and change your metering mode to center or spot.

Hope it helps,
D.
