Flash Cubes

Hi-
I am dying get some flash cubes to use on some of my older cameras such as the Polaroid cameras. I know that I can get new old stock from places like ebay, but is there any place on this earth that is still manufacturing flash cubes?

You can try http://www.flashbulbs.com/polariod.htm - they seem to sell original cubes at $14:00 for three. http://www.flashbulbs.com/BulbPrice.htm. It seems these make an adaptor for electronic flash. There is also Meggaflash in Ireland, at http://www.meggaflash.com - these make bulbs for professional use. New cubes aren't made any more, apparently.

(I just wrote "old stock cubes"... I can't imagine *anyone* wanting those! :-0)

I assume production has stopped some time ago. Look out for that blue dot, it must not have turned pink.

Also remember that there where two types: the Flashcube and the MagiCube. The latter had got a mechanical ignition (piezo-electric).

I believe that it may be in the region of 20 years since flashcubes were made? However, I occasionally use some from a large batch which I bought on E-bay, dating from the 1960's, and these work fine. (Just need to check that the safety dot is blue, not pink. Having said that, I can't remember any which have turned pink, even after 40+ years!).

AgX is correct re the Blue dot and the two types of cubes.
You mentioned old Polaroid cameras. If you are using a "Big Shot" you will need MagiCubes or "X" cubes. If the Polaroid uses cubes then a third type is called for. A HI-Power cube. They came in packs of two and usually had a Red base as compared to the Black base of the regular and the X cubes. The regular cubes did not produce enough light. You might be able to regular cubes by adjusting the L/D control on the camera.
I have a supply of regular and X cubes but I will have to check on the availability of the Hi-Power cubes.

This brings back memories.

I had a cube (must still have it somewhere) that sits between the camera and flash cube.
It is used on cameras with a bi-pole hot shoe (i had it for an early Instamatic), allowing use of cubes on top.
This converter cube contains batteries, ingniting the flash cube on top electrically.
