I have quite a few 8x10 and 4x5 film holders needing fixing, basically the bottoms have come off. I have zero desire to fix them myself.. Anyone know who is reliable so I can send them to be fixed in North America?
In the long run black gaffer tape leads to more problems as it doesn't last, you end up with a sticky mess, it's as easy and cheap to do the job properly. I've had to restore a lot of items where Gaffer tapes been used and all made harder because it takes time and care to remove it & the remnants.
When it comes to removing the old tape adhesive residue the best product in the U.S. is Lift Off #2. It works well, does not leave a residue, and will not harm any surface. http://www.liftoffinc.com/
Goof Off http://www.goofoffstainremover.com/ may work but must be used in a well ventilated area and in fine print says not to use on some plastics.
Goo Gone leaves an oily residue that is almost as bad to get rid of as the tape residue.
A very timely thread. I have one 8x10 and a few 4x5 holders that would have a lot of life left in them if the hinge tape weren't kaput. Where exactly does one find "good quality gummed black cotton tape"? My 8x10 holder is under temporary repair with black electrical tape - the only fix I had handy when I needed to load some film.
