I'm trying out an Epson 850 Pro at the public library and am wondering if instead of having to insert my strips of Ektachromes or Velvia into the plastic holders, is it not possible just simply to lay them flat in their plastic sleeving? Of course there's some degradation but these would be for quick previewing, not perfect viewing.

You will get artifacts called Newton rings on film that is pressed directly against the glass. Not a real problem for a contact print type scan, but something you want to avoid for higher definition/larger scans.

There is a sensor at the very top of the scan bed on a v850. If you block that sensor it will refuse to scan in transparent mode, which is what you need to scan film.

Make sure you position your negatives at least 1cm or so from the top and you should be okay.

If you examine the bottom of the holders that came with the scanner you can determine the exact position of the sensor if you need to

If I understand your question, you want to lay the preserver sheet onto the glass and scan directly without removing the strips. I do this with every roll of film as a "contact" sheet, scaled to the size and resolution for evaluation only. I apply adjustment curve layers (in Pshop) to individual frames to further evaluate. The preserver material needs to be clear, and I lay a sheet of anti-newton ring glass on top just to flatten it (if you don't have ANR glass, plain window glass would probably be ok for this purpose).
