The first three look as though they've been heavily over sharpened during transition to digitalising.
My first roll came out fogged so you done better than I.

These look like terrible scans...this is similar to what I get from Delta 3200..except with zero tonality in the mids.

I think the picture of the platform has a lot of potential. And I would revisit that subject more than once if I were you. Good job.

Pan F is a pretty high contrast film, so it's a little hard to control at first. So don't let the difficulty getting it into posting form scare you.

But it is an awesome film too.

I find that I generally develop it soft. And if I have high contrast negs then print soft.

For a first roll I'll give you two thumbs up.

#1 looks way too contrasty, #2 still a little contrasty. #3+4 seem to have optimal tonality. Maybe the exposure was off in the first picture?
Apart from that they look pretty good. Keep shooting! Which Developer did you use?

It's difficult judging images on a screen when the scanning could have had so much to do with things. I'd agree that the first couple look a bit contrasty but whether that's the negatives or not is impossible to say. If it is then I think you need to give a little more exposure, maybe a stop, and cut back on the development by, say 15% for starters. But hardly any of us get things right straight off the bat. The important thing is that you've proved to yourself you can handle medium format and you'll now keep on buying film to make sure it hangs around as long as possible. Wont you!!

Did your scanner sharpen the images? I feel the same as a few people above who have said that the first two frames look pretty over-sharpened. I think the amount of contrast MIGHT be okay if the photos were not so sharp but it is hard to tell.

I would ask about your scan settings but I know APUG doesn't take too kindly to that sort of thing

3 and 4 are my favorite. The only thing that bothers me a little about 4 is how the focus was missed. It would have been okay if the entire frame was out of focus but, for me, seeing the branches in focus really makes me uneasy.

Anyways, overall a pretty good set! Mind sharing what you shot this with?

How do they print?!

The scanner to post them is good for the initial bit so you get some bragging rights.

But slap those puppies onto some paper in the darkroom. That's where you want to be.

And I still like the picture of the platform. There is potential there.

I hope my first results are as good, should have my room set by mid October. Last time I was in a darkroom was the early 70's. I liked the platform image.

No. 3 is my favourite from recognising it as pan-f.
The others to me looked too contrasty and no.1 has some highlight detail blown.

It looks like a good start.

You missed your focus on the portrait though. Person is all fuzzy. Would've been a decent shot. Plus, he gets points for smoking a pipe (something I do as well).

I think Ilford Pan F is a film best suited to Pyro developers.

Might just be the mood he wanted to convey? I rather like it as it looks like it could be from a far early time. That being said, I think the shots before the Pipe Smoke would have been better in Pyro or even something like Rodinal 1:100 semi-stand. Perceptol at 1:3 might have calmed them down a little also. Just my opinion of course. JohnW

Normally, I'd agree with you, John.

However, since the plant behind him is in clear focus, I don't think I can. If the whole scene was out of focus, I actually wouldn't mind it. However, the plant being in focus draws my eye away from the interesting part of the photo (the gentleman smoking). Perhaps the plant is supposed to be the subject, but I doubt it.

Either way, the shot has good potential and I'd like to see jkasarda revisit it and try again.

I agree.

Keep it up. Forget all this other mumbo jumbo for a few months. Concentrate on what you have now.

Decent film. Regular developer. Get the shots on the film. Make the prints.

Building Rome comes later.

You're off to a hell of a good start in my opinion.
