Just developed my first roll of film after years of digital. My teenage son thought I was cool. Felt cool too.

I know that feeling! My first roll was just a couple months ago and a few dozen rolls later it still feels cool.

Thanks for your post with the good news. I just love reading these. Your son is absolutely right, and it gets better each time. If this is your first try, you have now joined the unbroken line of darkroom practitioners stretching back over more than 180 years, and counting. How cool is that?

And welcome to APUG. Keep us updated with the journey. Good people here with lots of information and experience to share.

I just finished developing my first roll and I'm waiting it to dry. Can't wait to get the negative scanned!!

Cool-daddio, -- felt good, didn't it! Nothing but fun from now on.

Close to fify years and counting from the first roll and it still feels that way.

Thanks guys. My scanner is coming this week (first one was defective). Would like to do a full darkroom, but that'll be a tough sell with the wife. Might settle for contact printing in the bathroom.

My oldest son (almost 12) wasn't too interested in my attempts to teach him old-school photography. Then, low-and-behold, he got to middle school this year and found out that they have a photography club that has it's own darkroom and is apparently considered pretty 'happening.'

Now he has me signed up to volunteer to help with his science class's current big project: oatmeal-box pinhole cameras with paper negatives.

His old man, apparently, is wise to the ancient and mystical magic of causing images to appear from inside a dark box. There's no app for that.

But that's only half the fun of analog photography. Try to print it yourself in a rental or community darkroom. Ansel Adams said "The negative is the score and the print is the performance". Best.

Rinthe: I'm getting a Cannoscan 8800f. I originally got a refurbished Epson 4990 and it barely worked, so I wanted to try another brand. I was going to get a scanner that could do 8x10 negs but figured if I ever got that out of hand, I would just contact print in the bathroom and forget the scan.

Mainecoonmaniac: Wondering how to find a rental or community darkroom. Any ideas?

When I was a young man many years ago, there were quite a few in the Sacramento area. Now they're harder to find. There's only one left :-( Maybe Google could help you. Another alternative is to go to some sort of photographic workshop just to get your feet wet. If it sparks your interest, there are tons to used darkroom equipment on Ebay for cheap. My first darkroom was in my parents bathroom. With digital cameras being so popular, folks don't shoot much film any more.

I'll try the nearby community college. My local photo shop had no ideas. I would love to have a darkroom in my house, but I have so many unfinished house projects right now that the boss would go ballistic if I started something else first.
